Pretty much any time I try to access the UCAS site to research Universities, it does not work.

I have isolated the problem down to being me (other people can get there).

I tried a proxy (www.secure-tunnel.com) but this did not work.

I would really appreciate any advice and help in this matter that people have to offer.

sorry i can't help you, your ISP administrator blocked it perhaps? maybe a virus detected on its site and your virus protection is blocking it?

I know you hate it but try diabling yoru vrius scanner and then go to the page, obviously enable if you do something else not on site or if it doesn;t work.

If it was a virus scanner etcetera, then that would not explain why it sometimes works and sometimes does not.

I suspect the ISP. Youtube often does not work as well, however I can view Youtube through a proxy when that happens. UCAS, annoyingly, does not have the same simple solution.

EDIT:

It works on the downstairs Windows XP computer, but not my new one. I do not know why.

EDIT2:

Thanks to Si, the website now works.

I copied the DNS settings from the downstairs XP computer, then 'flushed the DNS cache' via command prompt using 'ipconfig /flushdns'.

Then I restarted the computer and it now works.

The DNS change worked because your internal DNS settings had blocked the website. Basically, it was no coincidence it was FORCED that you could not access resources at times. You are now bypassing your internal settings.

Any particular course you are now browsing Metritutus?
If you are looking for a course in Music, I highly recommend Cardiff.
Medicine.... Nottingham, Cambridge, Cardiff, Southampton, they are all good ones...

lol at Canebridge. fyi, it's Cambridge...

Also, it might be worth noting you have to actually take music to study it, and I doubt he's taken the correct subjects for medicine either.

It is spelt Cambridge... I wrote that... *confused evil face*
He will probably do some Music as I have faith he can get through A-level music easily. Medicine.... from what I've heard from him, no he hasn't got any of the required subjects besides Physics which isn't vital but useful. Chemistry is what you need and Chemistry is dead easy to understand... just loads to learn.

Uhuh.... sure Wynney....

CO2 + H2O = O2 + C6H12O6 balance that Metritutus (all numbers are supposed to be small, you need the same amount of C H and O on either side)

I vouch for Wynney.

And Shadow, you seem to be picking rather arbitary careers anyway, I didn't think that Met was that interested in medicine.

Spoiler for Solution:
6CO2 + 6H2O => 6O2 +C6H12O6

Been a while since I did that ><

I'm not sure what Metritutus is interested in and I don't know any other careers well enough other than Medicine and Music to help him in any other way.
As I suggested, speaking to Azcn2503 would be useful as he is some sort of IT technician and Metritutus has an interest in computing but other than that I'm not sure what career would be good for him. He has potential in music though, definitely great potential.

And the equation was correct.

Metty needs to decide what he wants to do. Other people can't help him with that.

I think he's reffering to the bias in saying try music or medicine when its because thats what your interested in/trying to do and nto so much cause met was plannign to do it. I understand it's all you know in this area but Met might have wanted to be in a travelling circus as the ringmaster for instance, have you suggested that to him?

Actually, I've considered an awful lot of alternatives. I don't think I'd be cut out for anything in medicine to be honest. It's not a field I know anything about, and I don't have any real interest in it.

Music on the overhand is different, I've put a lot more thought into this recently. I did originally simply have a vague idea of something in computing for a future career, however, having spent quite a bit of time at the IT centre in Gloucester, even though it's a course and not a job, I have taken what it has been like to give me an idea of what a career in IT might be like. I have also been considering my own knowledge in this field.

I know a few things, more than the average person I suppose, but not that much more. I feel however, after trying to think long and hard in a 'if I knew this, would I want to do this' kind of way, I feel I probably would not be cut out for, or find interesting, a solid career in IT. And it is very maths driven too, which is a field I am not exactly tops on.

When originally thinking of my future, I dismissed music as being merely a hobby that I'm not that good at, should have put more effort into, and not something that I wanted to do.

However, aside from recent conversations with people and research, the months since I left school have given me much time to reflect. Things tick over, and I am now seriously considering some sort of future in music, or a career that involves music and computing.

However, I only got a C in music at GCSE. I should have put more effort into it. I remember finding some of it quite challenging, it is a question of whether I would be able to rise to it.

Right now, assuming I go down a career path of something musical, should I go back and take an A-Level in music? My parents thing this would be stagnation, and that I should be looking to go for something higher rather than sitting on a qualification level that I have already achieved.

Second, I only took music theory up to Grade 5, and I took the exam for that years ago. I do not feel I am very up to scratch on that.

Finally, there is the question of University. What should I do, which course would be right for me to direct me into a career that I would enjoy. Unlike my GCSE's and A-Levels, this time I want to choose a course with a specific career idea in mind.

One thought of mine is that taking A-Level music might give me a better idea of what University music course to take.

This is of course assuming I decide to choose a music career at all.

I would greatly appreciate input on this.

Hello.

IT might be for you :) it's not as heavy on numbers as you would think. The courses (for instance the BTEC National Diploma for IT Practitioners) trains you in binary and bit shifts and programming... but for a IT Technician point of view, you'll never need to know it. You'll be doing things that are so much more fun, such as building/repairing computers, installing an configuring servers, and learning new things every day like recently I learned how to enable TN's on a Meridian Option 11 phone system from a telephone engineer...

IT Technician is a good starting point, even on a £15k salary it's a good start and you can make headway towards something like: CCNA if you like networking (Cisco Certified Network Adminisrator), or MCDST or MCSA or MCSE for desktop, server and network support.

IT is fun becaue it is varied. Every day there are new problems and new solutions. OK, 90% of the time they are the same problems over and over, but only you can fix them and only you can think of a way to fix it! IT can be difficult because organisations see it as just an expense, so it can often be difficult to do the things you want to do with the money that you've been granted... It's a challenge!

So, I'm not selling IT to you, but please don't disregard it. I think you'd get on well.

If music is what you are after -- I wish you the best of luck. I wanted to go to a speciality music school instead of Newent, but apparently I wasn't bright enough for it (I had the flu at the time, yes, the actual real influenza type flu so I failed the exam). Music is certainly varied and different and all of those things I probably mentioned above, maybe.

Now it (half the time) does not work downstairs. Sometimes it says 'Network timeout' on Firefox. Sometimes it loads fast and works fine (this is within about five minutes, it's that intermittent). In IE, it loads part of the page, but then sits there (just with the header).

Help, this is desperate.

IE and Firefox. Clearing out the cookies on IE had no effect, so I do not see it as being likely to work on Firefox either.

It could be problems with the site itself. It's not the best site in the world.
