If Microsoft had released Windows 7 instead of Vista there would have been no rise of Ubuntu or OSX. Now, alas, it is only a matter of time until people come back to the claws of the Vole. The Linux crowd were too busy talking about their superiority on the server and ignored the desktop to the OS's eventual doom. Windows 7 is as pretty as Apple stuff, just as easy to use, and does not treat you like a moron.

I disagree with this completely. No matter how much better Windows 7 is over Windows Vista, it's still Windows, it's still .exe, and it still comes with a shed load of viruses. Windows is just bolt-on on top of bolt-on on top of security-hole on top of broken-exe.

I don't think that Linux will ever get as much of the desktop space as Windows, but it definitely still has its place. I am very glad that I purchased a netbook with Ubuntu and I wouldn't have it any other way - I'm sorry, but for browsing the web, checking my mail and for general office productivity - Linux beats Windows for speed and security.

In addition to this - I don't believe that 'the rise of Linux' has come about die to Vista's shortcomings, but due to the fact that Linux has evolved rapidly itself over the last few years. Linux is more of a mindset, an ethic, than it is to a direct competition to Windows. More people are realising this and making a switch. I haven't made 'the' switch but I have definitely now made 'a' switch. I still use Windows day in, day out, for gaming and for my job. However I prefer using Ubuntu/Fedora for Internet banking, transactions, etc.

As for the netbooks... since the majority of them only come with 1GB of RAM, I am glad that I don't have to run AV and FW software on top of the OS. That slows things down a lot and uses a lot more of the CPU and RAM. CPU cycles need to remain low to get the most battery life. I once heard that there is 30% more battery life in a netbook when comparing an out of the box Ubuntu install to an out of the box Windows XP install.

Tum te tum.

Windows is always a hog.

When XP came out everyone moaned at OMG 1 GIG OMG OMG OMG. Guess what, you lol@people who have 1 gig now.

Everyone moaned at XP when it came out as well, but service packs fixed that.

However, it puzzles me, why release windows 7 so soon after? It makes no sense, if they would have focused more on vista, and released it a year later, no need for windows 7, and less moaning from people

Linux has no viruses cause it's not worth making viruses for.
