OK, this one really has me stumped. I want to add clean URLs to my website for various reasons (you can probably guess them), but I'm having real problems with it.

The method I've been trying to use is .htaccess mod_rewrite, but it doesn't seem to work properly. I know mod_rewrite works on our server as I use it for my avatar. However, it seems to break whenever I use any variables, and I don't know why. An example of one of my rules is below;



Any ideas how to get mod_rewrite to work or another way of doing it (htaccess and php only, though)?

I could give you a PHP method. But only if you can give me an example of a clean and an unclean URL.

Lets assume a blog.

Clean;

blog/yyyy/mm/dd/blog_title

Unclean;

blog.php?year=yyyy&month=mm&day=dd&blog=blog_name

The first is better for many reasons. Easier for visitors, better for search rank, can change code and bookmarks will still work etc.
