So, after another hundred hours or so, I'm back to give you my impressions of Battlefield 2, which I understand a few of you lot on these forums play...
I'll break it up in to four sections: Gameplay, Graphics, Sound and Value, and I'll give you a score out of 10 for each of these sections. How professional I'm feeling today.
So here we go:
[b:5b4033b930]Gameplay:[/b:5b4033b930]
On the outside, it appears like a very enjoyable game; lots of teamwork is involved, there are dependancies and roles in the battlefield, not just mindless shooting. You fight for your life trying to capture control points with your teammates using all skills handed to you.
But, the reality is that this teamwork just never happens. Other players are selfish, disrespectful and rude. Squads rarely stick together as a team, but instead wander all over the map wasting ammo on terrain. Preset communications are hardly ever seen having taken some action on, so you can be standing in a terrorist bunker asking for support, backup, artillery, a vehicle pickup etc., and it will never arrive.
Sure, the game is fun for the first few times that you play it, but the novelty wears off rather quickly, and conquest mode (the only mode) becomes a real drag. This game definitely needs something else, regardless of the number of maps it has.
64 players seems like a great number! Sure, it's a lot of players, so this means it's a lot more space for things to go horribly wrong! Multiply your average 32 player games non-cooperativeness by 2! You're sure to get frustrated in these games, and not in a good way. Even on the Official EA servers you'd expect to see some decent gameplay, but there's nothing special going on, just a lot of dying, teamkilling, base-raping and spawn-camping, that never seems to be punishable.
The lack of a realistic physics system takes you out of the experience, as does the lack of blood/dismemberment. And if you try to make the game better by adding blood, PunkBuster will detect that you tried to make the game better, and will ban you from the account server for an indefinite period of time, and will reset your stats to 0.
My rating: [b:5b4033b930]3/10[/b:5b4033b930]
[b:5b4033b930]Graphics:[/b:5b4033b930]
There's not much to say about the graphics. They are nothing special, but they're not bad either.
The view distance / draw distance is far too short, even when set to 100%. If this is meant to add to the experience; it doesn't.
My rating: [b:5b4033b930]5/10[/b:5b4033b930]
[b:5b4033b930]Sound:[/b:5b4033b930]
Again, there's nothing special here. I've not found myself jumping out of my seat in either excitement/confusion. The sounds are crisp and clear, although footsteps can be heard from way too far away!
360 degree audio sounds good, but again it becomes confusing when you're on high alert because you heard footsteps, even though they're on the other side of the building.
My rating: [b:5b4033b930]5/10[/b:5b4033b930]
[b:5b4033b930]Value:[/b:5b4033b930]
Not worth paying for. At RRP ?34.99 this game is an absolute rip-off, considering that it will not run on a lot of machines out there, even if they far exceed the requirements set for it!
The game becomes less and less enjoyable as time goes on, and the inconsistencies, bugs and glitches become very annoying.
This game should be made available either as a free download or it should be scrapped entirely.
My rating: [b:5b4033b930]1/10[/b:5b4033b930].
So as you can see, I'm really pleased with the game...
Overall, it's a well deserved [size=24:5b4033b930][b:5b4033b930]3.5/10[/b:5b4033b930][/size:5b4033b930]
