People may have noticed recently that steam community now clearly shows people who have been BANNED by VAC.

This has led to a new (but rather confusing at times) policy brought into effect by ED. I was wondering if people had any thoughts on it?

http://www.enemydown.co.uk/news.php

basically to sum up what i can understand of these new rules:

people banned in any game before will have a GLOBAL BAN on E.D. for this game, e.g. if caught hacking on one account for CS:S, you will never be allowed to play CS:S again in ED.

I'm guessing this is done by people who simply change their steamIDs on the ED website when their account gets banned to a new one. I'm not sure what happens when you create a new user or if its possible to track this, but everyone with an old steam account used on their profile (or new, to those who buy new accounts with less digits) which has changed will be checked and if one of them is banned, they are banned from ED in this game.

I say in this game because atm the VALVE policy is that if you are banned from a VAC1 game (i.e. CS 1.6) you are still able to play CS:S, even though on community it still says BANNED in big letters. To counter this, anyone with any ban on their steam id (e.g. banned from 1.6 but allowed to play cs:s still) will be banned from playing ED EVER again on CS 1.6. But also, from CS:S, until the user can prove that his VAC2 is clean and he can connect to CS:S Servers.

This allows ED to track known hackers, I think this is a good thing, to keep an eye on those who are known hackers and with XAC, demos etc. it is easier to keep a track of those who are still cheating.

NOTE: Any hacking in any game on ED results in a PERMANENT ban from all games in ED, not just 1.6 for example if you have a VAC1 ban.

I think the best thing about this could be the banning of users who have been VAC banned and have then simply bought a new steam id and entered it on their profile. Cheaters can leave IMO, though like i said earlier I'm not sure what happens when creating a new forum profile with a completely different email address etc.

Anyway, I was just wondering what other people thought about this.

if you have used several accounts on the same ED user name, e.g. i was banned for hacking on one account, went on my ED profile and inserted a new stead id (of a account id just purchased) then ED would track this down and ALL accounts used will be banned from playing. also, people who try to create a new ED account will have to purchase another steam id because all steam ids used before will be blocked.

For example, ED realises the multi steam ids used before by a user. therefore bans the user. in response the user takes his most recent steam id (still not vac banned) and creates a new ED account. when trying to enter the steam id, it would be invalid, as it has been used on his old ED account.

Intereseting, has one possible abuse though - getting others banned from ED by adding their SteamID and a VAC banned ID to one account.

ok put it this way, very few tards play in ED, they spend their time on pub servers complaining about lots of things :P

also, i didnt see this ED thing as a bad thing, only a good thing. I have never or will ever hacked, ive never even searched for hacks or downloaded them, yet alone use the things.

Wow, that post was kinda fail, completely inappropriate thread, wrong information (the TF2 lot have never been active on CSS in the past year), insulting loads of people and general anger.

If that is aimed at Metty, Si, and I, we prefer Tf2 because it is a lot more fun to play. I wasn't ever a fan of CSS anyway really... :/ I only go on when no one else is on TF2! Or when Helly is on <3

But yeah, Its cool ED are taking a stance on things like this. I think Steam have done the right thing by telling the world whose accounts have had hacks on. And its correct for ED to hand out lifetime bans, they do it in athletics for cheating, so I dont see why it would be any different for a computer game....

Back on topic perhaps?

I agree with DHR, it's good to see ED taking an agressive stance on hackers, even if it is slightly abusable.

tbh your account, your responsibility.

if your account gets hacked the only person you can blame is yourself, and it wont stick with me the same as "oh my bro used the hacks meaning i got the VAC ban" - yes, it may be true, but it is too fortunate an excuse to use.

No, the other way round. Someone takes your SteamID and sticks it into their account, they hack on another ID, causing all SteamIDs on that account to get banned, meaning that your legitimate SteamID gets banned aswell. Unless there's some form of auth system for SteamIDs?

ED locks the id so they wouldnt be able to use a new id on that account. they wouldnt be able to use your account to play and therefore you appeal - saying your account is on the wrong team and has been hijacked. if they use your steam id its the only id they will be able to use.

I've had my old 7-digit steam account hacked, and i had to buy a new one so i KNOW how much it hurts, also had a mate get his vac-banned(while i was using it), you can imagine the flame fest that ensued.

However, people cannot force-ban your ID, so there really isn't much room to exploit, however, if you put in a wrong ID(say, you miss a number) you can run into a VAC banned ID and get well self-owned.

However hackers will always remain, clans just like to recruit people who are awesome, and want to win, hacker or not, most won't care.

Hackers are bad, they ruin the game IMO. What's the point, so you can claim you're better that someone else even though you know in actual fact that it's just because of a program you're using. Kinda deluded if you ask me.

Ogris, you have some good points with the entering of wrong numbers and such. Hopefully ED have an appeal system.

ED do have an appeal system, also as for the wrong digits, it takes 3 days for your steam id to clear, so your steam id would probably come up as invalid anyway. then you can always change it. ED has several admins for all of this and the likelyhood of it ever happening is extremely minute anyway.

hackers are very bad of course, but it you check the general banter thread i made, you can start to see why some people do choose to hack with all the pressure they have.
