Yes thats right at a press conference in Tokyo Nintedo revelaed yet another version of the best selling DS. This version is pretty much an anorexic Lite being even lighter and smaller! mainly because ninty decided to remove the backward compability with the GBA great reducing its bulk. It also features a 3 megapixel camera in the middle located on the hinge i think and when closed on the bottom right hand corner. Also a Sd card slot and will be able to paly ACC and other music files. This DS will be compatable with the wii and can connect to the new DS shop channel were u can pay and download dsware games. SOunds good no??? :P well it gets better : The screeen is now 3.25 inches which is bigger than the lites and phat. and with the launch of the DSi ninty also announced a brand new Final fantasy game called Echoes of time.
The DSi is said to be launching in Japan onthe 1st of november and hopefully wil hit european shores sometime in early 2009 spring at the latest. So what do you think???? imo i beleive this to be the TRUE DS
Image
it will be available in black and white. New colours hopefully in the near future.

I expect there will be some awesome apps in the massive homebrew scene of the DS created for this, as the hardware is bound to be a tad better then the DS Lite and it obviously has a camera.

Also an SD slot means no more Micro SD to DS cart slot! :D
Memory for homebrew and such can be a lot lot bigger.

By the way, if you have never looked into the homebrew side of the DS then DO IT!

Yes, if you don't mind having a shorter battery life I guess its good.

And AAC files... man <LOOK MA, I AM SWEARING> you nintendo, go <LOOK MA, I AM SWEARING> yourself, go bone over apple somewhere else. Ogg FTW!

IMO order of eliteness (best first):
DS - DSi - DS Lite

However Gozzer, you have a good point about the homebrew, and homebrew stuff tends to own.

I'm guessing the battery is smaller. Plus bigger screens draw more power.

Camera: WTF? Don't care.

SD slot: NICE, Ninty's gonna have a field day fighting pirates though.

Bigger screen: Cool.

No GBA slot: Meh, wasn't used that much anyway.

Music: Well, AAC does suck, but I guess they want to appeal to the iPod crowd. Most my stuff is MP3, though Oog Vorbis is the best, ATM, I think. Then again, MP3 player for music, bit like the camera really.

Inbuilt web browser - Nice, one good thing as it's a pocket device, and a lot smaller than even NetBooks.

One cool thing is downloadable games, though I never used VC, so doubt I'd use that.

All in all, nice, but nothing spectacular. What happened to the New-revision-new cycle (they missed the revision witht eh colour, though, I think). We've now had new-revision-revision. Give us something new!

I'll stick to my (barely used, don't even have it with me) Lite.

In all fairness, the GBA had two other guises aswell, in the forms of the SP and Micro. Only the SP was any good though :/

I wont bother with this one either... I still like my chunky DS' thanks :)

I'm sorry couldn't you already purchase a web browser for the original DS?

Oh, yeah, I forgot the Micro, but that was released after the DS as a sort of new product (being much smaller).

And yeah, you could, but it's nice having it built in (especially as the webbroswer needed the GBA slot).

I doubt they care. Piracy has been going around on the DS for years now. A bypass card with a MicroSD slot allows for playing illegal ROMS. There's loads of these bypass cards as well.

I have an R4DS which I used for homebrew and allowing my DS to play music/vidoes/any cool homemade app. For £15 its too good to be true.

Yeah, but it makes it more accessible, lol. Though their market is the casual market, which doesn't have much piracy.

Heh

We get the DSi in Spring.

US is "late 09".

Japan is unknown.

DSi downloadable games are region locked.

Ah duuuuuhhhhhh

And Nintendo are shooting themselves in the foot once again by doing region locking... its pointless on a hand held when so many games are Japan only....

I skimmed it, misread :P

It seems the region locking is for downloads only, though;

Bit-Tech wrote:
In other words, regular DS games can be played regardless of region on either the DS or DSi, but the downloadable games and DSi SD card games will be only compatible with the DS. There'll be no option to transfer or port the software.

if not bring on the cases and stickers, followed by pink, followed by red blue and green, followed by limited edition game based ones. then they'll stick a tv tuner in it and call it the DSTV and start the cycle again.
