Just wondering if anyone would be interested in an OpenTTD night (or even a dedicated server, depends on the resource usage)?

Also, what type of game would people want? A few examples are listed below;
Standard competative (possibly planes banned because they make it too easy and boring)
Cooperative (train network building)
Cooperative competative (teams)

I think using a nightly version would be a good idea, as they have extra features that aren't in the 6.x series (most noticeabley, more advanced signals which are absolutely awesome).

Standard competative.

You get stuck with a noob on your team and you can just say BYE BYE train network.

Planes aren't that bad, airports take up quite a bit of space to build.

Planes are terrible. For example, I had an extensive well built rail network (100+ trains working smoothly) and then someone else built 10 planes and beat my incoming, just spamming airports at large cities. For me, and a lot of others, that takes the fun out simply because it makes the game a plane spam fest where you have to use planes or lose.

I really want to try a cooperative game but I don't think many people will want to.

I don't have OpenTTD unfortunately.

However, I would like to play a cooperative RTS game like C&C if somebody can recommend a game that allows you to play cooperatively... I would probably buy it.

OTTD is free, aslong as you have the original graphics files, so this is open to everyone to play. I will add the link to the openttd website so you can download the game. I can't provide the graphics files here, though, as that would be illegal (and that is not an incentive for someone else to provide them here).

Most RTS can be played cooperatively, as you can set teams and bots. I've played CnC3 "comp stomp"s online (team of humans vs team of bots on a skirmish map). Red Alert 3 will have a 2 player co-operative campaign mode aswell. However, that is for a different thread, I would like to see if people are interested in an OTTD game.

I'll probably need to reinstall it/update it, so I'd like advice on that.

Otherwise, I suppose I wouldn't mind a game, but go easy on me please. :)

Go to the website and download either the stable or the nightly (up to you, nightly has more features). We will be using a recent nightly when we play, and we all need to have the same version, so I will say which one nearer the time (unless they release 7.0 as that will ahve the nightly features, but I doubt they will do that soon).

A cooperative game can be good for learning as people will be inclined to fix what you're doing and tell you why they fixed it. If you wish to play a game with me, I will be happy to help you.

Well, just name the time and date really.

Also, isn't TTD abandonware now? If so, posting graphics files is HARDLY illegal.

I would rather not post the graphics files, though they're easy enough to find yourself.

They are on abondonware lol, thats where i had to go to get mine... Technically, SKillers is probably the only truly "legal" OpenTTD actually on the forum...

I'd be up for it.... I'm not as experienced as Skillers with rail networks, but I can do most of the interesting stuff like ro-ros and things. Also, I seem to be the only one who can make money from road vehicles. We usually play with "Gentlemans" rules, such as no aircraft (Unless they are moving something stupid like coal), no blocking (buying bits of land infront of an opposing rail network) and no buying exclusive rights. If we could play in a sandbox, that would be the best way to go. But I don't think cheats work online that well... But then we could do a hugely co-operative game. Have a large (but not huge, as 2048 maps are collossal and slow down even mid range systems) map with plenty of industries to just learn and explore stuff about the game.

I just found a patch setting in the nightly I'm currently playing that allows you to set the plane speed back to 1/4 speed (like in the original TTD, they then changed it to "full speed" [so the numbers on trains and planes appeared right]), which pretty much nerfs planes enough to be balanced.

I would really like to try a cooperative game, it would be interesting to see what we could do working together.

I'm sure that plane speed setting has been in since 6... because me and Ekim were using it a while ago. We had it set to 1/2 but planes were like 3x more expensive.

I'd certainly be up for either a co-op or competative game. I'm starting to get back into it all again now :)

Well, but with co-op you would really need to sort out quite good base rules, so that you dont end up with someone ruining your train network completely.

That probably wouldnt happen. Skillers would check over every rail connection I would of thought. Anyway, with a large (ish) map, we could seperate the map out so we have a beginners area (where train lines can be made and destroyed easily) and a main area (which will be supervised and checked most probably). Anyway, its more logical that we make it a sandbox, so it'll be totally fine.

From what Skillers has told me about nightlies you might not need Pre-signals anymore... The new PBS system does it all for you iirc.

I hope we dont use any new GRFs for the time being, it should be just a normal game imo.

If any newGRFs are used, they would be available int he OpenTTDcoop newGRF package, for simplicity. The OpenGFX replacement project is pretty nice, and doesn't change gameplay at all.

Its Transport Tycoon from the DOS days, but made in open source.

It's free because they wrote it from scratch. The only thing that costs money you need are the original graphics, which are "abandonware".

Heh, the other junction needed cleaning up. I'm looking forward to working on the 4way in the middle, should be interesting.

This game was a fun experiment with PBS. First game I've played with it properly, and it works so well. When we finish the mainlines we can work on getting all the industries hooked up in a massive train spam (2 track mainlines FTW :D)

I predict 500+ trains in the end :D:D (TL3)

If you do actually start up a dedicated server, i suggest using either the NA or UK renewal trainset, and setting weight multiplier for trains to at least 5, so that the game won't just be "Whore the most expensive engine LAL"

Same goes with wagon speed limits etc.

EDIT: Also, with newGRF's, a startdate of 1920 wouldn't actually be half bad.
