At the moment, the best store bought gaming PC would probably be the Voodoo Omen. Contains a full raft of top end components, plus a fully custom case and custom watercooling (including a custom WC PSU).

Home build would have to be watercooled, tri-SLi GTX280s (yes, I know, Aaron, but they are still the fastest) with a top end Intel quad core, 8GB of top end memory, all overclocked. A SSD instead of a HDD would also help.

GTX280 is good, but it will be no match for my pair of 4870X2's :D, I very highly doubt 3 GTX280's would come close either. Nvidia have some awful SLI driver problems with 3-way...

Half the cost of that machine is extras that don't do anything for speed.

Plus, the Omen would be faster and better built. Voodoo overclock every one a hell of a lot, and their building skills are incredible.

Aaron, the X2s aren't out yet, when they are, then I'll say tri-4870X2s ;)

If only that were possible...

But there are more details on the X2's. They're going to have 2GB of GDDR5, and it's based on the RV770XT core, meaning it should have the same clocks as the 4870.

I thought it was going to be octo-crossfire compatible.

It's all rumours at the moment unfortunately. I am pretty sure you could put 4 together on an AM2 or AM2+ motherboard, but whether the driver could use all 4 cards (8 chips) at the same time is another matter... heh! You can guarantee it would be a Spider exclusive, however.

Hmm, interesting, but it may be beneficial for AMD to make it available for Intel aswell, as that will appear to the super rich ultimate PC builders.

The next chipset, X58 for Nehalem will not support 4 graphics chips... at the moment...

OK... turns out I was completely wrong...

Nehalem's X58 supports Quad Crossfire

So I was correct to say that yesterday, but not today!

The thing is, right now, you could esily (but expensively) build a much better one.

You could build a similar system for around £3000, and actually get decent cooling (their watercooling system is naff). Plus, you could do a fully customised dual loop full system watercooling system (CPU, graphics, Mobo, even RAM if you wanted to).

The bottom line here is that if you are an enthusiast and you've bought a prebuilt "enthusiast" class system, then you are not an enthusiast at all. If you cared about the money, you could save 75% of it and get a better system anyway. Companies like Alienware should pack up and go home; extreme for me means a middle aged man building a PC with his bare hands in his garage - nothing compares to homebrew.

i managed to customise a sli gaming pc from pc specialist, it has 3xgtx 280s

http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/index.php?page=results
this cost £5160.00 excl vat and delivery

heres the crossfire-x gaming pc from pc specialist, it had an option between the hd 4850 512mb and hd 3870x2 1024 mb, i didnt know which one was better but the 3870x2 was more expensive so i chose that

http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/index.php?page=results
this cost £4468.09 excl vat and delivery

as you can see ati gaming systems are significantly cheapewr and can save you about £1000 when you are buying a stupidly expensive gaming pc from an unknown pc maker

One of my friends had a PC built by pcspecialist.co.uk :)

I'd never get one pre-built though, personally. You can really tell the difference between a pre-built one and a custom build made by your own dear hand. Pre-build's don't compare.

Pre-built laptops are different. There is very little kit available for you to build a laptop, and they are far more complicated than desktops due to space restrictions. I have a prebuilt tablet.

That PCSpecialist system is a bit odd, 4870 is currently the best ATI card, and you wouldn't want to build a top end system with anything else.
