Nvidia's new graphics cards are being released today.

So...

Have some GTX280 benchmarketing figures:
http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquirer/ ... cores-here

It seems like GTX280 is a pretty decent performer and compared to the 9800GTX, it beats it hands down in pretty much every benchmark.

I still think Nvidia should be worrying about ATI's 4870 and 4870X2 at the top end.

Edit: Crysis seems to run at a playable frame rate!!

OMFG, it gets 30fps on Crysis at 1920x1200!

Seems a fairly good performer, lets see what AMD/ATi have!

DO NOT BUY

Update: Yes, I think that this news is significant enough to wake you all up early with an ALERT text message.

AnandTech has put the GTX280 side by side with a dual-core Penryn...

I thought G80 was supposed to be the end of big chips, Nvidia?

Anand wrote:
But then we have the question of whether or not you should buy one of these things. As impressive as the GT200 is, the GeForce GTX 280 is simply overpriced for the performance it delivers. It is NVIDIA's fastest single-card, single-GPU solution, but for $150 less than a GTX 280 you get a faster graphics card with NVIDIA's own GeForce 9800 GX2.

Sorry, Nvidia, you've really screwed yourself over... what with the SLI lock-down on your motherboards, and your strange CUDA open model allowing others to use your precious technology, with your overpriced, overheating graphics cards that make too much noise and suck too much power...

I really like Nvidia but I think they've screwed GTX280 so bad it's not even worth considering.

You can get them a lot cheaper than that £400.

And al GPUs are massive, but that one really takes the biscuit.

This one is rediculously large, compared to any GPU this is huge!
But yes, £400 for a standard GTX280 at reference clocks is still asking far too much.
The card will also run just as hot and as loud as any other as well.

It does have one thing going for it. It looks pretty sweet (yes, I like the cooler design).

Anything's better than that awful GX2... two chips facing each other with a shared heatsink.

Apparently an engineering marvel but it just screams fire and flames to me.

Yeah, though it has the same heat repercussions as putting the chips on the same board and sharing a heatsink. The GTX280 is a nice replacement for the top end expensive super card.

I don't know, the performance does not justify the cost for me.
Also, when you talk of the shared heatsink, are you thinking of the 3870X2? It uses one heatsink per chip.

I don't think it really makes much difference if they are separate heatsinks, they still output the same total wattage of heat (for the same chips), so would overall be roughly the same.

The cost does not justify the performance, however, if you're doing money no object it is the best card.

No, the temperatures are different on each GPU. One of them is aluminium and one of them is copper to compensate for the warmer air flowing over it from the one chip.

Update: Sorry that sounded rude! I didn't mean to sound rude.

Heh, it would have probably been better to go full cover copper plate, IMO. That or use heatpipes to make them both get equally cool air (split the heatsink laterally rather than vertically).

The fail continues...

As much as I would like to think NVIDIA have some magical driver around the corner that adds an extra 40% performance to the cards, the hard fact is it’s highly unlikely as it would be ready now. It’s been a while since NVIDIA has made a misstep in the graphics card world, but it looks like this could be one. It will be interesting to see what’s going on with the GTX 280 in a few more weeks time; we can’t see people embracing it like the 7800 and 8800 series of cards from yesteryear, though.

Why does it need an extra 40% performance? It already pwns most benchmarks, especially the high end Crysis ones (+150% over the GX2).

The problem is that although the performance is better, it's nowhere near good.

I would personally consider 30FPS at such a high resolution (1920x1200) playable. Especially since Crysis seems smooth even with low framerates.

Correction to last post, it should be the GTX, not the GX2.

I find that with a FPS average around 30 in Crysis, it is very laggy.

Strange, I remember playing at 20FPS and finding it pretty playable. More so than most games at that framerate.

Maybe it's an opinion thing.

I find that playing at a low FPS like 30 gives me a headache and I can't concentrate properly on what I should be doing, and thinking more about how much my expensive graphics card is sucking.

I think it's important to have an average FPS of between 60 and 70.

The FPS reported by many games shows an average over a couple of seconds, so an average of 30 could mean that you're hitting 1FPS some times and 40FPS at other times. Like I've said so many times though, an average FPS of over 100 actually feels significantly faster than an average FPS of 60.

Sounds like Anand was right...

AnandTech wrote:
The fact of the matter is that by NVIDIA's standards, the 4870 should be priced at $400 and the 4850 should be around $250. You can either look at it as AMD giving you a bargain or NVIDIA charging too much, either way it's healthy competition in the graphics industry once again (after far too long of a hiatus).

Nvidia are simply charging too much, and had hoped that the 4870 wasn't as good as it was hyped up to be, which of course it was!

Because...

As of tomorrow, Nvidia are lowering the price of the GTX280 by $90 and the GTX260 by $30.

Sauce

And then comes this unfortunate news...

Nvidia to write of 150 to $200 million

Nvidia are losing the battle this year.
