A report on Fudzilla today says that K10.5, the 45nm native quad-core from AMD will end up faster than Intel's current 45nm quad-core processors by up to 20%.

There was then a report published almost immediately after, obviously direct from Intel saying that Intel's Nehalem, their 45nm quad-core processors with the new QPI technology (similar to HyperTransport, dropping Intel's renowned and recently much-praised FSB architecture) would outperform AMD's K10.5.

The report went on to say that Nehalem will also be a bigger chip than K10.5, and probably not as efficient from a PPW (Performance Per Watt) perspective. Intel will however retain the performance crown.

But, K10.5 is supposed to launch before Nehalem, and if that is true then we may see AMD steal the performance crown for a short while as early as Q3 2008.

Hmm, interesting. Looks like AMD might pull back, but it could be complete nonesense aswell. We'll have to wait for the reviews and benchmarks.

Ah, OK, so it is just standard DDR, then. You will use any benefit of high speed RAM using the value RAM, but then again, the extra RAM could balance that out.

I'm not an expert on RAM, but i have read that AMD chips don't realy take that much advantage of speedy sticks. Ofc, don't know if that is based on older standards though. I know what you mean though, but hopefully the value RAM would be able to balance the differential. I run mine on a 133 divider anyway for high OC's. They do OC but not that well. OCZ are reputed to overclock well, mine don't go too far. I will find the sweetspot though. The Value Select can go.

Hoprfully AMD will get that killer tech, but speed obcsecion appears to be alive and kicking as it were.

Well neither benefits from speedy RAM unless you actually push the CPU up with the RAM. I think Intels have typically had a higher FSB though, so naturally took more benefit from the faster sticks.

Yeah, an AMD with synchronous mode would be nice.

I run my AMD 664 X2 in synchronous clocks with a 225MHz (450MHz effective, PC3600) FSB. It could go further, but I can't be bothered. By the end of DDR, both AMD and Intel where running a standard FSB with sychronous clocks to PC3200 RAM, it's just that Intel had, in the past, faster FSBs.

Oh, and they sucked and had too many adverts on TV.

What's that got to do with anything? Or did Intel ads always have "high FSB" in?

It was basically the entire P4 range, with the Prescotts being the worst offenders (I think. Stuff like the Pent M was actually fairly decent, but that was based on the P3 architecture. The entire P4 architecture sucked completely.

Perhaps, but at least Intel seem to innovate with complete vision. They appear to get things to work, whereas AMD, seem to make things work. Purely my own opinion ofc.

Well both companies do know what they're doing, but it took Intel a while to swallow it's pride and admit it made a mistake so that they could go back to actually making decent stuff, and not the (realtively) rubbish P4s.

Yeah. I was never tempted to aquire a P4, that would have been my bias towards AMD. The Quad Pumping FSB has to count as being a breakthrough imo. If anything, P4's are pretty much responsible for mainstream Liquid Cooling. I remember seeing some pretty good mods.

What's also strange is Intel are now dumping the FSB architecture in Nahaliem (sp?), should be interesting.

I think watercooling probably was a byproduct of the extreme temps P4, then people realised you could use it on everything for much better overclocks.

Yeah The EE exploded the scene. "Nahaliem" Another bizzare codename. Yeah your right, it will be interesting, although as usual, an upgrade to soon for many. What is the Roadmap?

Nehalem is scheduled for Q4 this year, or H1 next year for the more affordable parts...

Nehalem will end up being a very large chip, therefore expensive.

I think it will be the first native quad core, though, rather than the current "stapled" duel cores. It should be 45nm, with a die shrink sometime later. If it works, it will be very very good, I think.

I'm more excited about K10.5 at the moment as the performance should be better than current-generation Core 2 Quad's, and the chip will be smaller than Nehalem, though it will be a little slower. I think AMD will have the price/performance advantage.

I haven't heard much about it, but from what you say, it could be interesting. I think Intel have better chipsets atm, though. It will be interesting to see how this pans out.

Hopefully the K10.5 will be killer tech. Got any links? Googled it but not finding too much. There something about a Shanghia K10.5 clocked @ 2.8GHz. I guess you could loosely place that at FX class, i suppose.

I think you're right there, though I wish they would drop the FX and Black Box Edition suffixes, and use the Radeon style codenames instead.
