hoo thinks that the computer is going the way of usb, soon thats all there will be, even speakers. Everything will be usb. But Im not complaining, it would make maxium compatiblity. It would be cool, everything though, imagine. Setting up your computer, it would be easy. All computers will have about 10 usb ports if im right. So it will be intereasting to see how it progresses in the next 5 years. Post what you think below. But seriously, im pretty sure this will happen

My computer has 10 USB ports.
I doubt everyting will be USB - it's not fast/versitile enough. You can get headsets that are USB, but they cost more. Screens will always need the more extensive cables due to the amount of information being sent. You can get over USB devices, but this are mostly perihiperals or components for people with not enough space in the case or who require something different. You can get USB soundcards, but people much prefer the PCI cards. USB modems (dial up) cost far more than their PCI counterparts, and are bigger. That's another problem, size! USB devices have to be bigger as they require more circuitry (it's the amount of connections and stuff a device needs).
Nice idea, though.

6 plugs on the board (internal USB, can get brakout brackets and internal USB devices, I would be using 5 but one of the [double] cables isn't long enough, so I'm only using 3) and 4 on the motherboard back.
Anyway, what's so wrong with so many, my motherboard just so happens to support them (I think yours will support 8 or more, 4 external, 4 internal [possibly with breakout brakets]).

I used to have 8 USB ports, but got rid of 2 and replaced it with a fan smack bang in the top of my case, which has cooled it down a lot more (especially since it's got an output of like 50CFM.... my computer sounds like a jet engine though)

If you want jet engine, try sitting next to this thing when the PSU decides its too hot (or when I whack all 8 fans up to max). Don't ask why I have 8 fans.
Still USB will never replace internal interfaces, it just cant do enough!

I was thinking of replacing all my fans with high CFM ones. I quite like my loud system.

It's not very good when you try to work, though! I want to add watercooling to my system, but I can't afford it.

You couldn't resist, could you?
Anyway, when do you think they'll release USB 3?

What kind of speed would that be? Never really thought about USB that much, USB2 is pretty fine for your standard peripherals; Keyboard, Logitech G5 Laser Mouse (which is totally lush in Battlefield 2), iPod, etc.

Damn, I want a Logitech laser mouse!
I'm not sure what speed it would be, possible around 2Gbps (current is 480Mbps). It would just keep getting better and better, which could mean some of the more advanced perhiperals (such as TV Tuners) could be made more advanced.

Bleh, I'd always get the internal types, and the PCI-E ports would be well suited for that little extra. Just a note to say that the laser mouse is brilliant! I upgraded it from a Logitech MX1000 (which is also a laser mouse). The laser in the G5 is twice as accurate as the one in the MX1000, and it has on-the-fly sensitivity adjustment, which is perfect (in Battlefield 2) for when you want to do millions of barrel-rolls in a jet, or normal running/driving about, or getting the extra bit of accuracy when shooting, or sniping especially. Ahh, love it. Looks good too. Feels right. Mmm.

Yah, I would really like one, but they cost a lot.
As for internal devices, I don't have enough space, also, what about laptops?

Laptops shmaptops, all I do, every day is deal with laptop computers and I hate them. It would be sensible for laptop users though, yes, as it would be their only option... Unless they invent an external motherboard of sorts, which you plug in to a USB port, and you can add controller cards, graphics, etc., the USB3 would come in handy then, eh? Or we could just carry our desktops about with us...

Well, laptops are becoming more modular now - you can change the graphics, RAM, HDD and battery easily in most modern laptops, we may see expansion sockets soon.
As for lugging PCs around, maybe the SFFs, but not my desktop (20KGs approx)! Also, they don't run on batteries, meaning you need the power socket.

Though, you could take a power generator around with you, or modify an exercise bike in to a dynamo, with a few mounts for your desktop, monitor, keyboard etc. - 'keep fit while fragging'.
As for going the way of USB, the next model up of the Sennheiser headset I bought (and the best/most expensive available) is the PC165, which is USB. The advantage of this is that you can take it anywhere with you, even on machines that don't have a soundcard - there in an on board soundcard built in to the USB plug. Nifty, but I don't need it :P Of course, again, laptop users would love this.

Your first comment - feel the madness (what's the betting that somebody has done this)!
I have seen a lot of USB headsets recently, I suppose they're more convinient - just plug em in and go, rather than fiddling with all the connections round the back.
