What will come next after the PPU, a AIPU?

Discuss what you want next!

I don't know. The AI is basically the only bit that's be left to the CPU now, so that will probably stay CPU controlled.

Maybe they'll stop adding new stuff for a while, and just keep improving what we've already got.

I think it's a brilliant idea though, having a processor made to replicate life-like physics. There's a lot of articles out there saying things along the lines of 'Are we ready for it?' and 'It belongs in a console.'
Of course we want it!! As long as its overclockable, and as long as it makes UT2007 (amongst other titles) play sweet.
Who doesn't want next gen technology? (Rhetorical)

Haha, whoever wrote that is stuid, consoles are nowhere near as powerful as PCs! Their graphics, especially, suck, so the PC should be the first PPU device, which it is!

Yes, it's a great idea to seperate the Physics from the CPU, as it is becoming so complecated now, but I don't think we'll see any other new dedicated PUs in a while.

LOL, I love the way how you have "azcn2503 wrote" above the quote, where you have said whoever wrote it is stupid. Makes me feel kinda stupid. Hahaha! But anyway, you're right, and I agree with you. It frustrates me when people say a console is better than a top spec PC. They are wrong.

Yeah, that wasn't intended, fixed it now.

Consoles suck in the power stakes, big time! For example - the new XBox only has 16MB of graphics RAM - I know RAM isn't everything, but that's pathetic! And people keep saying "ooh, the graphics are better", really, hook it up to my screen, and we'll see (not a blurry low res TV). The new argument is - "they have more processors", so? The processors probably suck - they're not made by AMD (or even Intel for that matter), they don't have anywhere near the sophistication of a proper PC!

And there's someone saying - "wow, the XBox beats all modern PCs!", It's a Pentium 3 733MHz! It don' stand a chance!

You mean the new Xbox 360? That has a variation of the Cell processor in it right (either a 3 or 5 cored one)? That's meant to be big, big business. Apparently, having the desktop variant of the Cell CPU (9 cores) will put you in the Top500.

XBox 360 - 3x3.6GHz cores by IBM. Though most IBMs use Intels, so I don't know why they're making a processor for a console (may have got info wrong). This is essentially like a dual core CPU with a Physx chip, though nowhere near as good.Playstation 3 - Sony Core Cell - 9 CPUs (I don't know their MHz). I doubt it can compete with the AMD Dual cores, augmented by Ageia Physics. Programs won't make use of it, and it's architecture will be totally foreign to PCs, making it hard to code for.

It's a foggy subject at the moment, but do take a bit of time to read over the ins and outs of the Cell architecture from the Blachford website: http://www.blachford.info/computer/Cell/Cell0_v2.html . It's technical, but that's what we like to see.

Hmm, interesting. I still have my doubts, it will take a lot to be accepted in the PC community, and it will mean even more sockets and stuff. It's progress will be made worse, as it is a console technology, which isnt usually greated well in the PC community.

I think it has a good chance, it'll offer more than 10x the processing power in the right applications, and it will be cheap. If it's going to make games run better, slap it in a PC and keep the pro-gamers happy.

That's the problem, programs will need to be programmed to make use of its full potential. For a start, games aren't multithreaded, meaning it will only use one core, unless it can make them multithreaded on it's own. Dual core systems make games faster because they can put all the background stuff on 1 core, and run the game on the second, meaning it gets a whole core devoted to itself, and doesn't need to be multithreaded.

I think that people want to see more true to life video games than ever before, and Cell could only help with this. I'm sure that developers would go far out of their way to make a game that runs on this platform (and if they wouldn't, then I would!). But will Windows ever run on it?

Yeah, I noticed that. It's part of the style, though. T can't change it without changing the style, and I like this style.
