Just out of curiosity, who has the faster internet connection.
My 1Mb is going up to 4Mb for free next month! Yeah me!

What! 4 Megs!!! (it's Mb by the way!). My line is only capable of 2Mb/s! I have got 2Mb/s per second and have noticed it is the limitation of servers that slows me down most the time.

Megabits = Mbs. Meg is just the internet shorthand (even though it's longer) for it.
The guide;
M = Mega (binary), m = Mega (decimel), B = Byte, b = bit (1/8th Byte)
The capatals apply to do all amounts (I.e Giga and stuff).

Well, he wasn't completely right! Anyway, the only reason I mentioned it was that it really annoys me. When I'm reading specs and stuff, I can't be sure what it actually means!!

but they don't! And I mean specs of lots of stuff - you often don't know what you're buying.
Can I just make a guess at something, Connected? You started this thread because you just found out about the upgrade?

Just quickly, 2Mb connection = 2 million bits / second = 2,000,000 bits = 250,000 bytes = 244.1 kilobytes per second theoretical limit. So if your ISP claims they'll offer a 2MB connection for the same price as a 2Mb connection, take it!!!!!!!!

@ gr, no i didnt just create that post because i found out about my net connection
azcn2503, you're wrong, a 2Mb connection is actually a 256KB theoretical connection speed:
2Mb = 2x(1024^2) = 2097152 bits = 262144 bytes = 256KB
Its all to do with the decimal and binary way of calculating bits and bytes. People commonly only know about it because they think that their hard drive is 160GB for example, but windows only reads it as 152.8GB because they sell it to you in decimal but most things read it in binary. You know: 1KB = 1024B not 1000B
Thats one thing that really annoys me, those who swear that a KB is 1000B instead of 1024, and so on with MB, GB, TB etc.

right, capital m/k (M_) is binary, meaning a K is 1024 and a M is 1048576. Little m/k is decimel, meaning k is 1000, m is 1000000. 1/8th of 1024 is 128, therefor 1 Mb is 128KB. (2Mb is 256KB).
The hard drives should be sold as gB, as that is true. I hate the way everything is all messed up!

Well, companies prefer to sell it as GB or gb because having one letter in capitals and other in lowercase, they think it looks stupid, even though its true.
Anyway, is this becoming an argument on the correct way to capitilize bits/bytes etc.

I'm right on the connection speed thing, by the way. Confirmed it with my college tutor (when I had one).

As you're network is wireless, it will be running closer to half that, depending on how far away the access points are, but it still won't affect your internet.
I think I remember you saying something to me about it being 2Mbps, so I think it is.

My broadband only got enabled on February 21st of this year, but we had it on some sort of pre-order. It annoys me when people seek help because of bandwidth troubles and some idiot says "Get broadband!" -- a lot of people still cannot get broadband, no matter how hard they try. My 56k used to connect at 45.2Kbps. My current connection runs at 2.2Mbps; we are also extremely close to the exchange, and live in a tiny village with a population of roughly 3 or 4, so the contention is almost always 1:1.

Lol, yeah, I got mine in July/August (can't remember exact date). It is a great improvement, though, so much more freedom.
Only 3 or 4 people? that's more like a house than a villiage!

StarBucks, woo! But it will only be 512Kbps (which Windows interprits as 576 due to binary/decimel), and not Mbps (if you had that, which would be 20 times faster than any other commercial BB available, I wouldbe envious. Does this mean you can now go online more?
Oh, and Species, statistically, 5% of internet users in the UK still have Dial-Up, you're not alone.
