You know, I might just hold off on the quad-core for a bit, and get the E6850, and I might just get the standard 8800 Ultra rather than the Superclocked version. Just an idea, nothing set in stone of course.

I'm trying to get a bit of a balance here. The quad core chip is £400 more than the dual core chip, and the Superclocked card is a good £50 more than the standard card. I'm going to be using 2 of them in SLI anyway, so is it really going to make that much difference? The answer is yes, it will make about 3% difference in 2560x1600, but for the sake of £100? No. But maybe, because I am Teh Aaron and I am supreme.

I've changed the spec slightly.

The motherboard will be a BFG Nforce 680i SLI rather than Abit IN9
The graphics will be BFG Geforce 8800U OC rather than EVGA 8800U SC
The physics will be BFG rather than Asus P1

This is in the hope that, although I doubt the last system would have any problems, this one will be more reliable.

You think using all BFG will make it more reliable?

There's a good chance it will for sure.

Surely, it's better than using components from different companies, because you'd expect that they test all their products to work together in harmony. I'm not going to budge on the Tagan power supply, however. The BFG ones just don't do it for me.

Edit: I'm just asking around on a few sites about mixing and matching computer hardware and whether it will make any difference. I'm just going by past general experience.

Well most the stuff uses the same chipsets anyway. I know you get the most performance using nVidia graphics on a nForce chipset, for example. However, I have never really heard of boards working better with each other. Most the time people just buy the one with the best merits.

The general feel is that it doesn't matter at all. Like you said, it's the GPU at work and they're all the same. This means one thing - I will probably go more extreme.

Personally I'd look at reviews for the best boards of the chipset your after. I'd definitely go nForce, though, with an nVidia card, they have proven combo benefits, and SLi.

I'm making an insignificant change to the spec of my PC.

This month, I am only going to be purchasing 2 components, the power supply and the graphics card. The graphics card will be an EVGA branded 8800 Ultra with standard clocks. I'm going for the standard Ultra because I will make use of their step-up program within the 90 days from registration and purchase a 9800GTX in November. I just hope they let me upgrade from a standard clocked 8800 Ultra to a superclocked 9800GTX.

I'm only buying 2 components this month because I want to make the most out of my monitor before buying any more parts for my computer. The 2 components are going to temporarily replace the ones in my parents computer that I built for them a couple of years ago.

Hopefully the DX10 goodness will make up for it. Perhaps not so much with 8800 graphics card, but 9800. 9800 being an Nvidia card, not an ATI card.

Yeah, I am thinking about running a clean Vista install on a separate HDD... but eh, I'm cheap and lazy. I'd rather buy more RAM.

And that 9800 thing is just classic for me.
