People keep talking about the price of LCD panels falling. They keep saying that there has been massive over-production and that stock needs to be sold quickly because it's spamming the channels.

I've noticed a few nice price drops recently.

The Dell 2407WFP (rev. A02, which apparently doesn't have the banding/colour problems) has dropped to ?619.52 (according to Dell website 21-Aug-2006). This is a drop of around ?100 compared to a couple of weeks ago (sorry I can't be precise).

The Dell 3007WFP, the 30 inch monster that everyone keeps going on about, including me, because I want one with my 7950GX2 card, is ?1471.10 (according to the Dell website 21-Aug-2006). Apple silently updated its 30 inch panel specification to match that of the Dell 3007WFP (they now use the same panel as the Dell monitor) but kept the same pricey price tag. They dropped it from >?1800 to ?1549. So if you like Apple and you want a 30 inch monitor and you have that much money then why not buy it? But remember what you get with the Dell monitor... you get a pivotable, swivelable, height-adjustable monitor with a 9-in-2 card reader. Not bad. It doesn't have patchy lighting like it used to, too.

Hmm, yeah. But you must admit the apple screens look very nice and understated. But I don't have that kind of money. Or space.

Anyway, I don't think that it's huge over saturation of the market, just the advancement of technology making it cheaper. They started off really expensive because it was new technology, but as it progresses, it always gets cheaper.

The price drop on the 2407WFP is because Dell have a 25% discount offer available until 30-Aug-2006. I get paid in a couple of days, so I might sell my 19 inch monitor and get the 24 inch widescreen.

Apparently, though the 30 inch monitor is great for gaming, it is still lacking - response time isn't quite there yet, and it runs at 60Hz. OK, that's decent for a 30 inch monitor with a 2560x1600 resolution. It will sap my 7950GX2, too, unless I get two, with a two-cored processor. LOL!

Hmm, yeah, oversupply would cause temporary price drops, but tech improvemenys cause consistent price drops.

I want Overclockers UK to put the 2407WFP in their "This Week Only" section! I'm keeping an eye on it today just in case it does go in. Chances are slim because it's already got 'official' discount... I bet the price is about to drop for good though.

Looking through that section, I see they're selling a 19" flat screen monitor (1280x1024 resolution, 12ms response time) for only ?120. Bargain or what!?

Hmm, but it might not be that good. Often monitors claim to be good but are rubbish.
