I've been thinking of converting the Comedy Soc's website to Wordpress so it's actually useful, but I've never used Wordpress before, so was looking for some pointers.

So, first off, anyone got any advice for using WordPress in general and any recommended plugins that every WP should have?

Also, if people have any answers to these, I would be grateful:
1) Is it possible to create pages in WP that execute PHP code, so that I could have some custom pages? I found this, but I was wondering if anyone else had a preferred plugin.
2) How difficult is it to make sidebar things?
3) How complicated is the WP group system? I want to interface with the the SU's API to get membership details of people on the website (which I know how to do) but was wondering how easy it was to add people to groups without using the control panel.
4) Is there a calendar/event system in WP or a good plugin for one?
5) I know you can set different blog post categories, but can you change the viewmode of the category? I want to have a page for the DVD library we have, which would ideally just show the title and rating, maybe some other short info, and have this sortable by title, rating, etc.
6) Any recommended plugins for gallery purposes?
