Right, my PC (the new one) seems to have some sort of freezing problem.

At random, it seems to lock-up. You cannot move the mouse, the keyboard is unresponsive, and the only way out is the power button.

Interestingly, on the latest one, rather than holding the power button, I pressed it once (which should start the PC shutting down). The 'loading' circle next to the mouse appeared. Not animated, but it did appear, even though the PC was apparently frozen. I could do nothing else though and the PC did not shut down until I reset it.

I do not know what is causing this problem, but I would greatly appreciate any advice. I am about to run a full virus scan in case something nefarious is causing this.

Are you using windows 7 beta?

If so uninstall it and use non-beta software.

I have never used Windows 7. I am running Windows Vista x64 Home Premium.

I am running the blend tests. It is to do them four times over (second session is just beginning). No errors thus far. I am browsing the internet as it does these tests.

Powar Sahplay and RAM.

Might be worth just crash testing your components in general first, just to throw the possibility of them not working out the window.(I had this when my RAM broke :/)

It just did it again. I want some kind of logging program to record every possible problem. Anyone got any ideas?

Apart from the Windows system logs, which I cannot find anything of relevance in...

I'm still having this issue.

However, if it is going to freeze, it will only do it within the first few minutes following when I have started up the computer.

Otherwise, it will run fine. It does not lock up in games or anything like that. In running intensive programs it seems completely stable. I am at a loss as to what is going on. The only things that show up in the Event Viewer are that the computer shut down unexpectedly.

If anyone has any suggestions I'd appreciate it.

does the hard drive "Spin up" then the pc unlocks like mine tends to do (if it's bad I get click click click for about forty seconds of locked-upedness)

No, I've tried leaving it for a while. I know what you mean, but that's not what appears to be happening here.

My hard drive sometimes stops randomly, think it's the data connection messing up. That causes everything to lock up but still move the mouse etc.

If it was the hard drive though, surely I would have more widespread problems?

I don't. But seeing as you can't move the mouse, it's probably not that.

Probabily one of three cases:
a) Some call to your cpu causes it to bail out (I suppose RAM failure could also cause this)
b) Your system config causes something to crash, I know how much you like to change everything possible within windows.
c) Something is connected loosely but not fully. Usually RAM slipping out causes a bug.

My system has been crashing on startup recently. It goes slow, then locks up, then the screen goes blank, then it comes back saying that the ATI Graphics Driver stopped working but it recovered successfully. Then it's fine, but I can't get my desktop wallpaper back after it does it.

Try not to be noobs.

Helps my computer run fine.

>< >< >< ><

Fresh install fixes everything! Except on windows 7 beta, grr.

Just make sure you do things in a logical order, motherboard drivers, gfx drivers dispose of sound cards as they suck and just cause problems. Easy pessy stuff really, also only change things if you understand what you are doing / implications of them i.e. before turning of windows features check to make sure your not turning off something you actually want on also set most to open manually.

Scottie, I had this problem when Vista was installed, and it remains now that I have Windows 7.

Anyway, I may have isolated the problem. I was running a memory testing program, and it encountered this error:

TstPassFailing AddressGoodBadErr-BitsCountChan
400003c1999c8 - 961.5MBc6d94b46c6994b46004000001
