Nice to see you on the forums, Gouldy P:

I'm not a hardware expert but I know you can build a pretty decent PC for £400-£500. Not amazing and too future proof but definitly something good enough.

I'm sure Skillers, Si and Azcn will share some hardware advice........

Here is a link to the thread that I used to build my comp, pretty good spec as you know form the LAN, at lower than your budget. Should be easy enough to upgrade some of the parts (bearing in mind that doesnt include an OS).

For purchasing parts, I recommend www.ebuyer.com. I got the parts for my PC from there, and it was delivered just fine and everything has thus far worked.

As you know your budget, it should not be too hard to start selecting components with the helpful advice of those more knowledgeable on these things.

Do you need a screen, case, harddrive, psu? ect

List what you have and I will go through ebuyer/scan/overclockers and set you up with a sweet pc.

Right, you're probably looking at;

Intel Core 2 Duo, maybe a Quad.
2 or 4GB DDR2 RAM
Appropriate motherboard
ATI Radeon HD 4850 or 4870
1TB HDD
Case, PSU, DVDRW, keyboard, mouse.
OS

And you would be sorted.

I too recommend Ebuyer, excellent service and good prices.

I can help you pick exact components, but I find it fun to figure it out myself.

Couple of tips;
PSU is important, don't get a super cheap one.
Case should have atleast 2 120mm fans.
DVDRW can the cheapest SATA one (IDE cables suck).
Motherboard, look around £50-100 with your budget. Go full ATX and get a decent chipset like P45.

You may also consider the AMD route, but I haven't looked at those recently.

Just get a standard ATX case, mATX can be a lot of hassle. You would need to spend a fair bit to get a large case.

iirc Full tower is massive and much more expensive. usually >£100
micro ATX is cheaper and smaller but can be a hassle as skillers said. there could be also heating problems.
desktop cases are short and wide, less space efficient but works just as well as a tower.
Midtower ATX (or just ATX) are mainstream, decent price with no drawbacks. i'd go with one of them

1. See DHR's topic for a system to get.
2. Upgrade some parts as you wish (if you wish to play much more demanding games, I advise getting a better GPU and CPU, the rest of his spec should suit you fine).
3. Check out www.ebuyer.com and www.ginger6.com as well as others and see who OVERALL gives you the best deal for the parts you want. While one company may be cheaper on one thing than the other, see overall who is the cheapest to get everything you want.
4. Run it through Aaron, Skillers or Si before you buy to make sure it's fine.
5. Order it.
6. Enjoy it.
7. Come online and play with us.

If you need an OS, then you had better wait for windows 7 especially at the discounted price for home premium.

Ok, lets see:

CASE

For a case let's say your willing to spend upto £30.00 for it, (unless you want to waste money, like me).

http://www.ebuyer.com/search?page=1&store=2&cat=23&sort=pricelow&limit=10

Keep searching until you find one you like. I recommend these but any should do really (from the list above):

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/127584 (under £30)
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/150294# (under £20)
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/150293# (under £20)

Motherboard

I'm going to assume you want intel, as they are simply better price/performance at the moment.

http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Biostar-TPower-I45-iP45-S-775-PCI-E-20(x16)-DDR2-1066-1200(OC)-667-800-SATA-II-SATA-RAID-ATX I can't recommend this board enough, it's brilliant. It's the one I'm currently using and it rocks basically. However if you don't need/want crossfire then get this one.

http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Biostar-TP45-HP-iP45-S-775-PCI-E-20-(x16)-DDR2-1066-12006-667-800-SATA-II-SATA-RAID-ATX (£70)(This turns out to have crossfire, which they must have added in a new revision as i'm sure it didn't have it when I was originally buying.

Or if you want SLI http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/MSI-P45-Zilent-plus-Zalman-H-S-iP45-S-775-PCI-E-20-(x16)-DDR2-1066-800-SATA-II-SATA-RAID-ATX (I had one of these, great boards but I accidentally kind of broke it, lets not go into that.)

If you don't want sli or crossfire, then you could get a bored £30-50, just post here first or read reviews / specs ect.

Processors

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/141515 (Look into buying azcn2503's, I would myself if I had the money)

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/139971( This is what I currently have, and it's more then capable of doing everything game's and otherwise)

Graphics Cards

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/168494 (£120)

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/155497 (£100)

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/155496 (£80)

Depending what resolution your playing at any of these will be fine for 1600x1050. Anything above and start getting the top one.

Hardrive

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/150245

You can pay less for less capacity but this should see you right for a while.

RAM

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/166785 (Have a look around for cheaper stuff, but this is fine.)

PSU

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/124927 (£42)

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/127861 (£52)

http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Biostar- ... -E-20-(x16)-DDR2-1066-12006-667-800-SATA-II-SATA-RAID-ATX (£70)

PROCESSORS

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/139971 (£130 This one is included in the price below) (Mine for £100)

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/141515 )£175) (AZN for £150)

GRAPHICS CARD

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/155497 (£100)

HARDRIVE

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/150245 (£63)

RAM

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/166785 (£34)

PSU

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/127861 (£52)

Lets say you get those parts, that would be £479. You could make it cheaper by getting the £20 cheaper graphics card, the £10 cheaper case ect. Or Buying a lower end processor (or my E8400 :P).

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/101321 CD drive.

Then you need a copy of windows if you don't have it. But I would recommend this as a starting point and go up or down on parts from here. (mouse and keyboard add £10 if needed.)

If you want a cheap deal, I'll give you my E8400 + XFX 650i + 2 X 1GB OCZ 1066mhz ram + 160GB harddrive (16mb cache) + My silver case (unused now) which has alot of fans + DVD/CD RW litescribe + mouse and keyboard and some speakers if needed/wanted and windows XP pre-installed. For £240 + postage, or with a 8800gt for £300

So you would need a PSU, and graphics card if you didn't want the 8800gt, also recommend the hard drive above. Basically this is what I use now, and it runs every game I play great. With the money I would simply be buying AZN's processor and one of those graphics cards above.

I'll post pics if you are interested in it. I'll also throw in a wireless router and wireless usb adapter if wanted, as I will be buying a pair of homeplugs soon.

Actually you can have a choice between 2 x 1 gb 1066mhz ram, or 2 x 2 gb 800mhz ram. The 2gb's are brand new as ebuyer sent me a new pair from an old pair I had broken (sat on one piece bent it in half almost, managed to bend it back into shape and somehow say they were faulty :$ )
