Post subject:  I think there's a broken driver on my computer.

Every so often my PC screen sometimes goes black then returns to normal and it says that the PC has 'successfully recovered'.

Sometimes however, it does not. The bluescreen that happened when I was asleep said it was an error with atikmpag.sys but the actual DMP file says it was dxgkrnl.sys.

After some Googling things seemed to suggest a driver issue, but not necessarily the graphics drivers (it could be something else interfering).

I followed the guide here:
http://jcgriff2.com/driver_verifier.htm

My PC did indeed bluescreen on reboot, but there was no real helpful error message. In addition, a dmp was not even stored, so I'm back to square one. Does anyone have any ideas of good ways to go about checking for some kind of broken driver?

EDIT: Does anyone know if System Restore deletes Minidump files as well? I want to try and clarify this in case I need to run verifier again, then grab the dmp file whilst in Safe Mode, then restore.

I'm sorry I don't think I can help with any of the issues here, but good luck in finding an answer.

Surely the easiest solution is just to clean up the drivers and install them again fresh?

I do not know which driver is at fault.

Do it for all drivers, starting with GPU.

Woops, misread, thought it was graphics ><

However, it's probably worth reinstalling graphics drivers anyway, as they are most likely the culprit.

I did update them fairly recently, but the issue has been around for longer than that.

Reinstall, including full cleanup, not just update.

Try using older drivers for a week?

I'll see to it. Any idea if AMD do any specific cleanup applications for purging all of their drivers from a computer? Or should a simple uninstall suffice do you think?

I was using older drivers until I updated them, as I do every few months. If memory serves this issue is very rare, but it has been persistent throughout.

Try baking your card?

I should say, baking has a 100% fix rate for my graphics card, it's fixed every issue that has been thrown at it!

Also, what OS are you running, and what service pack are you running?

Maybe you need to do a few more calibrations.

Serious one here, in the registry somewhere, there's a few keys involving the timings (well, timeouts and a few others I believe) in regards to the GPU, maybe try there?

A few days ago I uninstalled my graphics drivers (and in fact every option the uninstaller gave me, so the Catalyst Control Center, Catalyst Install Manager, etc...), rebooted, then reinstalled them. I rebooted again, reinstalled DirectX, then rebooted. Again.

So far I haven't had a bluescreen since. Posting this just in case it helps anyone with a similar issue.

Scratch that, it bluescreened with the same problem again last night. I'm going to update my graphics drivers to the just released 12.4.

EDIT: I'd like to add that this thing only seems to occur when I leave my PC idling, say overnight. I've yet to have this particular bluescreen happen to me whilst I'm using the PC.

Nuke the GPU... or let me. I have a hammer that can do the same effect :D

That would be a major breakthrough in Science. I hammer that can create nuclear reactions!

That's essentially what this is.

I think I may have found the workaround.

All the more reason to use a hammer on it.

Buy a more energy efficient alarm clock.
