Right, after some testing, it is about time we decided which Voice App we will use from now on. The choice is between TeamSpeak (which we have used since we got the server) and Mumble (an open source alternative that some members have taken up).

To settle between these two things I have created a poll using the new Poll System:

http://www.techious.com/poll/2

The poll will end on 17th August. This topic will remain open for useful discussion. At the end the staff will decide which we keep.

Thank you :)

Having now used both, I find TeamSpeak far easier to use. Every option is there to change and tweak. Wheras Mumble is very confusing to begin with and doesnt have as many decent options. Mumble also forgets the options which you have already set for some reason.

However, I have to admit that after a rather frustrating amount of setup time [Read: rage inducing] on Mumble, the sound quality is much better. I would rather use TS as it doesnt forget settings/servers etc, like Mumble seems to.

those points I would say are very valid DHR :). Although mumble does save my settings for me :s.

I much prefer mumble tbh, the overlay i <3. The sound quality is superior. I've never been too fond of ts myself. But people are welcome for their own opinions :)

I hate the overly, it's too huge when there are a lot of people on the server. When we were playing Grid with about 8 or 9 of us on Mumble, I had to ask Reb hor to turn it off as it was covering half the screen with peoples names :/

Not very conductive, especially seeing as GRiD gives you a lot of information from the top right corner.

you can move the overlay to elsewhere ;)/ get it to show only people who are talking and yes like you said, there are options to remove it.

Mumble FTW.

I agree that it's possibly more complicated, especially as you're not used to it, but there are plenty of people who can help you.

Mumble does remember everything for me, so I don't know what's happening there, might suggest a reinstall.

As for the overlay, yes, it is ugly as sin by default, buuuut, as with nearly everything Mumble, it can be changed;
Configure -> Settings
Press the right arrow at the top and go all the way to "Overlay"
Play with things.

I personally moved the slider all the way to the right (made it positioned down the side of the screen, not in the middle) and changed the font to Calibri 20pt, which looks nicer and is smaller.

Also, I suggest everyone slides the Quality slider ("Audio Input" in settings) right up, it sounds superb like that, but the default sounds a bit meh.

ventrilo iff mumble costs, but that battle will never be won

iff mumble is free, then mumble without a doubt

bottom line,

I VOTE MUMBLE

Mumble is open source, which is basically Free++ :)

(We wouldn't consider it if it wasn't, really)

The reason we don't use Ventrilo is because it costs money for more than like, 8 slots. I know TS is free, and Si has just informed me that Mumble is too. This is why we don't personally want Ventrilo, we would rather those funds went into making the servers better than on a voice system. Mumble and TS allow us unlimited slots for free = Awesome.

Mumble without a doubt gets my vote. Its a brilliant piece of open source software that is becoming more popular by the second.

The only disadvantages I see to using it amongst any other program is people not being use to the software. However others are and like said before we can all help each other.

As I said yonks ago, MUMBLE FTW! :P

you should get downloading mumble as well Frank, we will be moving to it soon as it's actually higher quality than ventrilo whilst having a lower bandwith.

I would prefer it for our css preferably because on vent I get over 400 ping in the evenings for no reason :(.

To be fair, i don't get the "bandwith usage" thingamajig, it's such a miniscule difference... sound quality IS better though.

Well, mumble all the way for me.

People out in the sticks here may have issues with bandwidth, or those with family members running downloads.

So we are paying for mumble?

Author:  Gozzer [ Sun Aug 09, 2009 10:44 am ]
Post subject:  Re: Future of Communications: TeamSpeak or Mumble

Nope. Mumble is free open source sofware that Techious can easily host from thier dedicated server.

The only time you pay is when companys host a mumble server on thier dedicated box for you, but I managed to get one for free :D
