As requested by DHR, here is instructions on how to record a demo: Source Demo First make sure you have the developers console enabled. If you don't, go to options -> Keyboard -> Advanced -> Enable developers console. When you want to record a demo in-game type record demoname where demoname is the name of the demo you want to save. To stop recording the demo enter stop into the console. To play it back type playdemo demoname, again where demoname is the name of the demo you have previously recorded. All demos are saved in Steam\steamapps\username\gamename\gameshortname. You can also download demos from our servers here! Source Demos into Movie Files Gozzer wrote: If you make it straight into an uncompressed avi using 'startmovie ipwnubz avi' then it should be fine. I think using the source engine to do demo > compressed avi is a bit cruddy though. Like oggy said, go for the frames: startmovie ipwnubz playdemo awandeag stopmovie This will give you a whole lot of individual screenshots of the demo you played, you can crank your settings up to max even if you get a low FPS in game. It doesn't matter as it does it frame by frame so it will just be a tad slower. Use VirtualDub or SonyVegas or whatever to compile the frames and audio wave thats created and bobs your uncle! Other Demos The best way to record these is to use FRAPS, a free version is available at http://www.fraps.com. You install this app, run your game and you should see a yellow FPS monitor in the top left. F12 - Move FPS Monitor Overlay F9 - Start/Stop Recording F10 - Take Screenshot Please note that a watermark will appear in FRAPS videos and will only record for 30 seconds if you have the free unregistered version, although an registered version will allow this to carry on for as long as you want (or as long as you have disc space (approx 1GB/min)) with no watermark. Hope this helps Si |

Just a quick note about Source demos - if the map changes the demo will stop and it will start another one, with the name demoname_2. Is there any way to get FRAPs to record smaller files? |

Smaller screen res? That figure is based on 1024x768 @ 60fps |

Lower framerate would probably work, too. I was just wondering if it had a different codec or something, maybe quality settings. |

Yes, any method of recording works. XFire also has a recording tool, but I haven't tested that yet. Recording a Source Demo first is a good idea, as it reduces lag. |

it probabily records in 2 frames a second, and then plays it at 25 making it 12.5x faster (or 30 and 15x) |

Record a demo of yourself using Source's ingame recorder, as detailed in the first post, then play it back and record with FRAPS. There are multiple advantages to this; Source .dems are smaller than FRAPS recordings, so you don't use as much space when trying to get material to use for a vid, and can rerecord the stuff you need. You don't lag while playing (.dems record game state information and not video information, no lag = better playing) It should lag less when trying to record (playing a demo uses less resources than playing the game, I think). |

Source recorder is definitly harder work but more than worth the trouble. Much much better quality and a lot more freedom to do what you want. |

Type the following into console: unbind f10 That should clear that up. |
