Maybe your mention of pipe organ will get him back into it.

Yes... because being a pr0 pianist is top of the list for becoming a doctor...
"Dr Shadow, you're patients are dead."
"No worries, I can play the funeral march!"
*plays funeral march to dead patients*
"Shadow, are you out of your brilliant medical mind?!"

Post subject:  Re: I'm a pianist.

You still get UCAS points. But I think medical courses will be like physics where you need grades not points (I needed ABB in physics, maths and further maths specifically, or AA in maths and physics and B in any other subject).

I'm not entirely sure what Medicine needs.... apart from an A in Chemistry A2 which is obvious.
Biology would also help with medicine (especially if you wish to confuse patients if you refer to parts of their bodies in the scientific names).
Physics would be useful as some of the instruments do use Physics to operate, PET scans for example.
Music unfortunately would hold no use for medicine unless I wished to be the musician at the funerals for the people who unfortunately die.

I play the piano to a reasonable standard :)

To take the Medicine course at university, must have:
- Chemistry, Biology and English Lit (Philosophy and ethics help "ethic side of medical stuff")
- AAB at A level unless you have good CV
- Nower days they want to see a GOOD CV, D of E, Volunteering at hospitals, sport back ground and musical background.

English Lit?! WTF!?

Author:  Hawke [ Tue Feb 17, 2009 10:20 am ]
Post subject:  Re: I'm a pianist.

I doubt they want English Lit... depends on the University.
Ethics in Medicine? Really... I seriously thought it was just:
Patient A comes in
Patient A lies about what he/she has
Doctor diagnoses truth of Patient A
Patient A cured
Patient A goes away
Enter Patient B
(repeat process)
Well I've got the Science down and I'm going to get a really good CV by the end of the Summer.

There's more to doctors than curing people.

Depends what department you work in.
GP, mostly like that.
If you're a specialist such as a neurologist, then it gets a bit more interesting.
But at the end of the day, the job IS all about curing people and making people feel better, even if they are dying.

Med school?
your looking at 3/4 A grades
iirc, Chemistry is a must, one other science (biology is preferred) and any other subject (as long as its not something like art)
maths is quite favored

note: someone from London didn’t get into med school with 5A grades. so pick your uni's carefully

i also play a bit of Piano :P

Post subject:  Re: I'm a pianist.

Well Chemistry, Physics and Biology at A2 with As should see me in, but my CV and interview give me the killer blow over every other human applying for the job.

Post subject:  Re: I'm a pianist.

I wouldn't rely on that. For a start, they get a lot of applicants, and most in the predicted A band, so you need to really stand out.

Well despite this topic being around for a while... Metritutus still hasn't noticed this and also commented he is a pianist (heard him over steam, he's better than I am and I'm said to be very good at it by teachers etc...).

Metty is a pretty good pianist. Whether he reads all the threads her,e though, is another matter *shakes fist*

Hadn't noticed this thread (thanks Shadow). O_o

I could do with having more pieces under my belt. Anyone care to suggest some?

Preferably some with a tune and not some atonal horror. D:
