I have been struggling to get TCP/IP to work between mine and my brother's PC.

I have re-installed the network adaptor several times, and am at my wits end with this thing.

Games don't work through it - they don't appear in the games menu list.

I read on a few web pages that sometimes the registry can get offed with TCP/IP.

Both computers are running on Windows 98 SE.

Can anyone help?

TCP/IP is the internet protocol, only used is the network provides an internet connection.

Well I'm pretty sure you shouldn't be using TCP/IP.

tcp ip is the set up 4 the computers ips ths is highly important 2 be set up correct though, is ths prob with setin up broardband or just runin a local network??

Woops, I got the wrong thing (got mixed up with DNS). I have it set to auto, but IP should be set to 192.168.0.x (x bein the number of the computer - start at 1). Subnet Mask is usually 255.0.0.0. I don't know about default gateway.

lol, well wev got each comp has a set ip though if a new comp is added it will work if set on auto asight as long as no more than 17 comps conect as weve set ip limits

Yeah, but auto only works with a router as they tell the comps what the settings should be.

Yeah, all I can say now is good luck, I know pre NT OSes are gits to network.

Make sure that both PC's are in the same workgroup.

Work group is the same (MIB).

DSN is disabled.

Each computer has it's own IP (123.123.123.1 and 123.123.123.2)

The subnet mask for both PC's is 255.0.0.0


It hasn't worked since the registry reset.

Has anyone any ideas?

If you're using ZoneAlarm, be sure that the PC's 'trust' each other.

The PC's IPs should be 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2. They're the standard internal network addresses.

There is no firewall. I will try the IP thing later, although it used to work. I can't see why thise two specific IP's would make much difference.

Well 192.168.x.x is used for internal connections, in a similar way as 127.0.0.1 (or [::1] if ur a IPv6 user) is your loopback address.

It did not work.

Yeah, especially when the computer hasnt got a working IP.

Can't do over net = can't tell people how to do it.
