Taking oxygen into the body = "breathing".
Respiring is something else entirely.

We use other things to make up for what the human body lacks.

It's still fine as it is, we just use tools to improve our abilities.

What Oggy said, the reason that we, as a species, are pretty poorly made is because we evolved past the need for special traits. AFAIK, we only have 3 major special traits - high intelligence, opposable thumbs and walking on 2 legs, and that's all we need.
