(Disclaimer - I do not have a Dead Ringer, and do not claim any of the below to be defacto truth, however, my experience against DR spies means I believe it to be, correct me if wrong).

This is not a discussion of the various merits of the spy, but purely the Dead Ringer.

I was thinking about it last night, and this is what annoys me about it...

...Things that should kill, don't.

Dead Ringer on TF2Wiki

Things you can survive;
Fully charged headshots
Crit rockets
Masses of stickies
Backstabs (requiring only 2HP to survive) - "Since backstabs have a base damage of 6 times the victim's current health, and the initial hit that activates the Dead Ringer does 10% damage, causing backstabs to do 6/10 of the victim's current health." - This has been tested by me and Si, it's true.
Taunt kills
The train/saw map objects.

Now, if you think a spy should be able to survive any of those, they simple shouldn't.

Even the update page says it - "...receive a non-leathal hit..."

Noticed this on the TF2wiki page, aswell...
"The Spy will take only 10% damage from attacks while he is cloaked, including the initial triggering attack."
and
"A Spy under the Dead Ringer's cloak will not flicker when bumped into; this is to offset the obvious difficulty of not being able to decide when and where to cloak."

Now then, the first means you carry on tanking ridiculous amounts of damage when cloaked and the second means you're harder to find.

Add this to having ammo/health everywhere on some maps and you're basically invulnerable aslong as you retreat to them regularly enough.

To me, all of the above is just wrong. A crit rocket to the face means you SHOULD die, as should a backstab, as should a headshot.

True, all true although so many people use it craply, you should take 50 or so damage first to make them think your not using dead ringer THEN use it :S

It doesn't matter, you can use it to tank damage rather than fool people.

I used to do that. However I have used other cloaks on our server and still been accused of not being dead.

I think it just winds people up more... You don't get anything for "killing" the spy, plus then the Spy is invisible, which is actually a benefit as then you can't see him.

You can also "kill" the spy infinitely if there is enough ammo around, Also tested by Si where he died just TWICE on an entire map of Wolf. That shouldnt be possible as a Spy... :/

In 2vs2? Pretty damn easy.

In a proper game? I don't think so...

In general the normal cloak is better. The dead ringer is just annoying but the spy takes a lot longer to kill. Yes the dead ringer could do with some tweaks to make it less exploitable but its far from overpowered.

Yeah, it's not really overpowered, just kinda stupid in it's current state. It needs a rebalance to stop the tanking.

Well a fully buffed heavy can, aslong as he's taking no other damage and the damage spread works in his favour :P

100% HS does 450 damage according to the TF2 wiki (OH heavy has 450hp) so it should kill anything short of an uber.
Damn dead ringer
