Performance is pretty much on-par with Intel's Kentsfield. Kentsfield actually outperforms the 4X4 configuration. AMD won't have anything to fight back with until their native quad-core's are released, and that is in Q3 2007... *yawn*

Good thing is... AMD are going to continue making their multi cored processors available in a dual processor configuration like their server parts. This means that when Q3 2007 does eventually come around, you can have an 8X4 system... 8 CPU's and 4 GPU's. Happy now?

New processors from AMD will be...

2x Athlon FX-70: 2.6GHz, 1MB L2 per core
2x Athlon FX-72: 2.8GHz, 1MB L2 per core
2x Athlon FX-74: 3.0GHz, 1MB L2 per core

Wow! 8x4 sounds cool... AMD are always good in that respect, allowing you to use older motherboards for longer and build stuff that suits you. Do you have to use 2 of the same processor for it to work?

Yes they will need to be identical models for it to work.

Pricing is good too:

2 x Athlon FX-74's will be just over ?500 for a pair. That's 2 x 2 x 3GHz cores.

Unfortunately not. They can only come as a pair, and I believe that they only work as a pair too. Still, this is fantastic value for money!
The motherboards required will cost roughly ?200 at first, though.

Hey Grim, this would make a great christmas present for you (nag your parents)

Oh, I thought they were just paired up versions of single processors.

Anyway, I already have my XMas present, lol. They also wouldn't go up to that much... ?700!?!

Looks like AMD cut the price of their QuadFX series processors right at the last minute... The new prices are as follows:

2 x Athlon FX-70 = ?250
2 x Athlon FX-72 = ?350
2 x Athlon FX-74 = ?450

Or roughly those amounts.

Notice how 2 x Athlon FX-74's cost a lot less than the quad-core part from Intel, and perform roughly the same?
