I'm wondering if this is possible.

I've had a go at trying to connect to an AS/400 mainframe system that we have at work. We normally connect to it through some official (but very unsupported) IBM developed software called Client Access Express (CAE).

I'm trying to make my own web-based emulator.

The reason I am trying to make it is because CAE does not work in Windows 7, and we are doing a Windows 7 roll-out. We intend to get Windows 7 on all desktops and laptops within the next 3 or 4 months. I think the latest we could complete the roll out would be the end of June.

I've been using Wireshark to monitor data going from the client to the mainframe, and seeing the data being sent back. There's a lot of it. Wireshark marks up all the data transferred and tells me what it's doing. It's pretty decent.

But without official documentation... I don't think I'd be able to do it. I wonder how other software houses made their versions of these emulators? Perhaps they have old IBM employees working for them now?

I'm sure the documentation wouldn't come cheap.

Spoiler for huge image:

Anyone have any experience with this whole backwards encoding thing, and can maybe point me in the right direction?

(Legit question)
What does the server do?

Why can't a newer piece of software be used on a spare machine etc etc

(Troll post)
Just use Java.lang.reflect :)

Can't you just use XP mode in Win7 to run it?
