I don't even like 3D stuff that much, but a 3DS just sounds extremely pointless.

After reading some more, people think that it will use head tracking for a semi 3D view, so that when you move your head you actually get a different view, which may be interesting, though still a bit pointless.

i can imagine pheonix wright series using it, havign to look under a book or something and you happen to spot a small code for the vault with evidence in it

Maybe shooters will incorperae this into a 'Leaning' technique?

other wise yes a little pointless :P

They said motion controllers were pointless and a gimmick

They said analog sticks were pointless

They said touch screens were pointless and a gimmick

They said force feedback was pointless and a gimmick

AM I THE ONLY ONE SEEING A CONNECTION HERE. Don't judge a book by it's cover, once we see how it actually works(and knowing nintendo it WILL work, WELL) then we'll throw words around about this.

EDIT: This made me lol

Ogris is right here. We can't say it'll be pointless until we try it.
Same with the Wii, I thought it wasn't going to be that good and had a stupid name. Today I think it's not a bad console... although I still think it has a stupid name ><

Touch screen is pointless, it's the same as a graphics tablet...

It's nice to have for the first week, then it's just "meh, touch tap, swipe, tap, tap". Nothing special

I'd like to see you play phoenix wright with a dpad and some buttons.

I'll admit, it's useless on phones, BUT on a DS, some games integrate it into a neccesity, which is why it works well, people need to give a chance to their new 3D technology will(WHICH WE DONT KNOW HOW IT WORKS) work. It's really just everyone insta-shunning any form of advancement because it's "not neccesary".

EDIT:

Supposedly using This as a storage device, 60 gig per square inch or so of storage.

Also some rumours of it using a nVidia tegra 2.

Does anyone else find it lolable that it will possibly be more powerful than a Wii?

If there's something Nintendo are good at, it's smaller yet more powerful consoles.

See Nintendo 64 --> Gamecube --> Wii ;)

This is a HANDHELD with potentialy more power than a Wii and a storage device that can hold more than blu ray(even though they will probably use a LOT lower quality, but still, it makes blu-ray look LOL), It's not standard fare really :P

Then again, maybe holographic storage even wont be used, but why patent something you wont use anyway? Meh :P. I guess we'll just wait for E3 and see what it's going to be like.

The DS has more power than the N64... So I wouldnt be overly shocked.

The maximum core clock is quite impressive, 400mhz is about what, 6800GT level?

RAGE TIME!

Clock speed != power, FFS, there's whole hosts of architecture and shader number stuff that determines actual power/speed. A 6800GT would probably blow this chip out of the water.

Anyway, the graphics chip is a low power chip originally made in 2006. It's nothing spectacular, though the power consumption is good, hence why they're using it. It is a decent chip, and probably a little bit better than the Wii chip (seeing as it has to power 3 screens [effectively] at similar resolutions as the Wii outputs [no HD on Wii]).

It just makes me wonder... Why not use a similar/more powerful chip in the wii in the first place? I doubt power consumption is a major problem in a home console.

Well most of the decisions Nintendo have made for the DS/Wii hardware and software have made no sense... is the 3D DS compatable with original DS games? Then chances are Nintendo have cocked that one up aswell...

The Wii is older than that graphics chip.

I would imagine that the 3D DS is backward compatible with all DS games, seeing as it's still called the DS.

Doesn't really matter if it is emulated, the 3D DS is massively more powerful than the DS, so even with a really complicated emulator it won't struggle.

If it's emulated then they might stand a chance... but then again I still doubt it.

NINTENDO announced backwards compatibility.

You can also read at the holographic drive reader patent which has a big BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY slapped right on it :P

I think we can safely say it will be.
