XP was released when we started secondary school... I wish businesses/unis etc would upgrade to 7 already...

They should start soon Skillers, now that 7 SP1 has dropped. Though I think a reason for not upgrading has been legacy 16-bit software and why upgrade to 7 32-bit when you might as well upgrade to 7 64-bit. Depends on each case whether its worth it.

In my case I haven't noticed an upgrade to 7, but I have noticed some systems running 2008R2, which is weird, as we have a primary *nix DCs, etc.

Surely 16bit programs would have no problem on 64 bit systems, or am I thinking too simply?

32-bit apps work on 64-bit systems by having them provide 32-bit libraries/translation as well as native 64-bit. Look up WoW (Windows on Windows).
IIRC Windows 64-bit dropped most if not all of the 16-bit subsystem.

Win 3.11 was really awesome. I used to use Win 3.11 and spent days and days on Ami Pro 3.0 typing up stories about Resident Evil and playing Tyrian 2000 and Avaricius and Biomenace. Seriously, where have the last 20 years gone... I even used dosshell to save space on my 100MB hard drive. I had a Turbo button on my MESH computer... I'm crying now...
