Smells to me like a bit of a dodgy hard drive. Give it a good spinrite just to make sure nothing goes wrong again.
Also I thought MC you ran Vista/7. Isn't alot being said here very XP specific :S

I vaguely remembered a recovery console, I didn't realise it had been removed in Vista. :P
