TF2 is incredibly CPU intensive.

How much you paying for the q6600? I'd recommend any of the Q9XXX or E8XXX instead, much better.

Also what gpu have you got? I'd have a look around the nvida or ati control panels make sure you have v sync forced off and sort out the other settings there are quite a few which will affect tf2 alot, if you don't know what your doing just set it to the middle of the auto manager (or perhaps one slider closer to performance).

Probably ~£100

My GPU is a Radeon 4870. I've tried messing with every setting you can do, it makes 0 difference to the frame rate.

Thanks for the recommendation, I'll keep my eye out for good deals on Q9XXX CPUs :)

4870 is still a top card. Make sure you don't have AA and AF pumped too high.

I can play TF2 fine on a 4870 with everything maxed (v sync on - tearing sucks, was getting 100fps before turning it on).

Got an intel q9400 @2.6ghz. TF2 can punch 110+ alone and never has dipped below 35 in a fight with a lot of people so is finally playable!
L4D1 and 2 also saw major improvements.

Case closed :)
