Just released this morning, officially.

Currently only 2 parts are available, a 2.8GHz quad-core (the 920) at $235 and a 3.0GHz quad-core (the 940 Black Edition) selling for $275.

They don't perform as well as the Intel i7 chips, but then you pay a lot less for a Phenom.

It's been released as part of the Dragon platform, which is made up of a Phenom 2 CPU, a Radeon 4800 series graphics card, and an AMD 790 series motherboard chipset. When combined, there are apparently up to 40% energy savings when compared to a standard Phenom (1) system.

Phenom 2 is compatible with existing motherboards running with Socket AM2+ which is basically every AMD 780 and 790 chipset released in the last year.

Apparently these chips overclock like crazy, but we don't know that until we try it for ourselves! When it comes to OC'ing, everybody has a lot of different experiences.

Engadget have some good read links so check out there article: http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/08/amd- ... -platform/

Update: OMG, they claimed it, but it actually looks to be true!

Not bad, not bad. It seems AMD are going for the cheap and efficient approach rather than the power approach now. Could work well for them, it did with the graphics.

Haha.

I just want to know when AMD will lower the price on Phenom (1) processors. I'm interested in purchasing a quad-core for <£100.
