So last night I spent a couple of hours repairing Windows Vista after it had a failed Windows Update. It wouldn't normally have taken long, but my DVD drive is faulty, and it turns out that the external DVD drive I was using for a while also packed in last night... so I had to grab an older IDE DVD RW drive from my room and a few cables from the loft.

Anyway!

After installing this Windows Update - Windows Vista refuses to boot and gets stuck at Configuring Updates Stage 3 of 3 at 6%. I have to restart the computer, but when I do it corrupts the registry and I have to run a repair again.

I'm planning on painstakingly disabling Windows Update and installing one update at a time until I find the culprit so that I can disable it. But these problems shouldn't happen.

Si, are you aware of any Windows Update problems like this? The update is recent (10th December possibly)

64 bit? Yeah go into safe mode and use system restore, mine had that where alot of windows services failed to start (so no sound, networking, aero, etc.)

Interestingly, I think mine succeeded, though it is asking me to update again. You are right, however, it really shouldn't happen.

If it happened to any other person... they'd be on the phone to their warranty provider or down to the computer store, probably paying something in excess of £100...

Yeah, I managed to get it working by using the System Restore feature on the Windows Vista DVD (safe mode does not boot). I'll just have to go through them one by one...
