It's be handy to know what you have at the moment.
Next year we will see a lot of dual core Turion processors from AMD, and they will probably be on par with Intel's Pentium M processor at that time. The Intel CPU's perform better than the Turion's at some things, and the Turion's perform better than the Intel CPU's at others.
Currently, though, there are a lot of issues with the new Intel Core Duo mobile processors because they seriously drain battery life, whereas they claimed to be the most efficient processor to date. Apparently Microsoft is to blame for it, but we'll see.
Don't settle for anything less than 1.6GHz with 512MB RAM and a 60GB HDD. By that time, perpendicular 2.5" HDD's will be quite popular, and quite cheap. You should be able to get hold of 120GB+ HDD's easily by then.
Also, remember that Vista is being released later this year, in theory. There are a lot of changes happening in the next year.
Perhaps if you told me what a good laptop would be for under ?500 if you wanted one now.. I'd point you to Dell because they're so cheap and stupid.

I remember having a really early PC, made by Mesh... it was built in 1988. It had Windows 3.11 for Workgroups, it had 500MB of hard drive space, and around 16MB of RAM, or less, I'm not sure what Win 3.x allowed back then. Graphics were integrated; the thing was huge.
I had a laptop made by Canon with a built in printer. That was awesome, shame about the monochrome screen though. That also used Win 3.11, and was built in 1989. I upgraded it to Win 95 using a few floppy disks when I was about 7, though. Great machine.

The first laptop had a 5" monochrome screen. Anyway, I would agree with Aaron, and I would say that you should be looking for a Pentium M (gasp, me suggest a Pentium???).

without office, i can find one for ?500
what im doing is waiting for the vista release offers, on previous versions companies have reduced the price on hardware that can run the new windows, so that they can sell more with that software bundled

1.8GHz, if you're looking at Pentium Ms, that's quite high. 1.5 is the standard, 1.7 is the mid range and 2 is the high end, I think. Yet, the 1.5GHz one compares to a 3GHz P4.

Hmm, 1.7 is definitely the most common. There is a 2.2, but that costs a bombshell.

You'll be spending more on the software than the computer!

Still, I seriously recommend you get a Pentium M. It's always nice to have a bit of sapre power, plus they are very good on the batteries.

You like the Turion. This is probably the only time you'll hear me recommend an Intel, but Pentium Ms are very good. Oh, and what you quoted, I was actually referring to Wigo's comment.
