DVI to HDMI cables are useless as hdmi is just dvi with the option to send audio which dvi ports cannot do

CORRECT?

(In short, it would be better to just use a dvi cable instead of a dvi to hdmi if my monitor has a dvi port)

Mostly correct, a few discrepancies ; HDMI is basically DVI-I (not to be confused with DVI-D or -A) however DVI is the predecessor and as such does not have all the advantages of HDMI. Such as HDCP compatibility and also the need for an additional sound cable.

HDMI is DVI-D, it's a digital signal. DVI-I is both DVI-D and DVI-A (analogue). It will therefore be compatible with DVI-D and DVI-I, but not DVI-A.

Visual signal wise, DVI and HDMI are identical, so using a converter cable won't make a blind bit of difference - it will just be different plugs at each end.

Some graphics cards actually use the extra DVI-A pins to have a full HDMI signal.

I dont need sound, it's just that the audio in cable wouldn't work with the HDMI and I figured it was the difference, however since hdmi and dvi are the same visualy there was no point me using the cable anyway
