I was suggested that on cpc forum, as I urgently require an external HDD as im fed up of saving everything on dvds all the time, How long do these things last? is that a cheap and nasty one etc :? :shock:

I think Iomega makes decent external HDDs, it should be alright. I personally don't know much about external HDDs, they're all the same to me (apart from mains and USB powered and capacity).

They invented the Zip Disk. They are the masters of external storage. External HDD's are alright, although spindle speeds are low (3600rpm). Also depends how fast your USB is -- don't get an ATI Xpress 200 chipset at the moment because their USB performance is terrible! Apparently this will be fixed in spring.

They run slow to stop them from heating up, and they can't go any faster because of the limitations of USB.

I wonder if portable hard drives use compression as a way to improve transfer speed, in that case..

Ive been looking at some reviews over at ebuyer at iomega hdds and appeently a lot of them are breaking down so I well put off that one now :o
