It seems my laptop has finally died this morning.

It was working fine for about half an hour (hence why I was online earlier) and then it decided to bluescreen and now it won't load past initially getting to the desktop.

the bluescreen appears so fast I cant register any information apart from some form of memory dump going on, so it looks like I'll have to dig out an XP disk and try to reinstall... nothing v important on my lappy anyway tbh.

This also means I will be online pretty sparingly (likely just on the forums) until I can get it fixed by using the other PC. I will likely return to full operational capacity on friday when I return to Swansea and dont have to rely on my laptop for internet >_<

Any ideas on how to fix it are welcome :)

PS: I've tried safe mode/last known good config stillblue screens at desktop :|

Dave, do you happen to have a digital camera/phone with a good camera?

Have you tried photographing the blue screen?

A video? Then playback and pause on the frame of the blue screen?

Error 0x00000024. NTFS.dll is <LOOK MA, I AM SWEARING>

(You can't read/write to hard drive without this driver). Use a xp disc to try and recover by replacing the file from the one on disc.

DISK CORRUPTION FTL
(Of course, you might not even be able to do that, in which case RIP hdd)

How do you know this?

Dave, get your XP disk, alter Bios to boot from cd first if it does not already. Follow instructions to get to the recovery console, and run check disk.

Got this from here, I could be wrong:

Yeah the problem is it asks for an Administrator password.... Which I don't know/didn't set :|

And I don't know any of the commands from C://WINDOWS> to do a diskcheck or anything like that :| I'm going to try some of my older passwords, I might of just totally forgotten I put one on, otherwise I can just reinstall and try to find a "hack" key for the OS :/

The administrator password is unknown because you didn't set one. Therefore some random shite is the password.

Also look at the bottom. Volia, cd key!

And Met, 0x00000024 means that. It's an error code, it has a meaning

Eh? wheres a CD key?

Well, if I just hit enter on the blank password, it comes up with the C://Windows> thing :| Can I try to run chkdsk from there? It's probably easier reinstalling now tbh, nothing of any real value was on my laptop so :/

@Nannal, I don't know if Linux runs similar network options to XP. I dont know if I can abuse the network config to get my big PC on th internet via connecting bridges and shit XD

The C:\ Windows thing is where you want to be.

The checkdisk instruction is on the blue screen.

CHKDSK /F

Running CHKDSK /F yields no result

However, running just CHKDSK gives

Use /p to check the volume anyway

Which is what I've done. So now I'm waiting for that to come through.

This appeared about 75% into the scan... So i assume something pretty major has been corrupted :| No idea what to do next other than try a reinstall :/

If this does not work, I just read in another forum thread that someone fixed it by doing:

DSKCHK /R

Good luck, as it seems the only other options are to run the drive as a slave in another PC and copy the data off (not an option with your laptop) or to format and reinstall.

EDIT: Check disk can correct errors though, can't it?

Did it fix them?

EDIT2: DSKCHK /R is the one that fixes problems with the file system damage.

/R did seem to fix the problems, I then rescanned with /P and it reported that the disk was healthy and had no problems on it :|

But the problem remains. So I'm going to try and install this XP disk I have to it and see where that leaves me :/

EDIT: Ran both again, currently 60 odd % through. Looks like I am going to have to re-install. Not a great loss, only my crappy laptop anyway lol :)

Trying to reinstall...

There is no option for a full format and reinstall... Would I have to format it in the command prompt thing before i can install the new OS?

Basically it's coming up with a partition thing and it's whining about there already being windows on one of the partitions... Should I just delete all the partitions? Or try to install 2 OS's on one partition O_o So Im confused >_<

EDIT: Dw, sorted it, formatting one of my partitions now :) *MIGHT* be online later I dont know lol
