We use Lotus Notes for email. It has a brilliant database design facility and is very scalable and scriptable using the LotusScript programming language. LotusScript is pretty much as close to VB as you can get without breaching any copyright laws.

Lotus Notes is one of those do-it-all types of software, it does email, calendars, appointments, etc., very similar to Outlook (it is the IBM/Lotus alternative). It's generally only used in large organisations so you wouldn't really have any hands on experience with it until you've worked somewhere that uses it or if you go to a training course.
