RIFT: Planes of Telara

RIFT is an MMORPG currently under development for PC (subscription based)

This looks like it is going to be quite an awesome game

The story begins with you being killed in some way... then being brought back to life by the gods. I am assuming that depending on what you were when you were alive determines what you come back as when you are resurrected. For example if you were a palace guard you might come back as a good person, or if you were a thief you would come back as an evil person... but that's just lore.

The game is being developed by Trion Worlds. They have a good number of ex-EQ2 developers working there. These guys know how to make a successful game.

A key part of the game are the rifts. Imagine them like Oblivion gates... merging two realms together. The landscape changes around them drastically (according to Massively it is very impressive and like nothing they have ever seen before). I think you can enter the rifts to close them off, or enter that realm and explore, fight, whatever... (update 30-Sep-2010: most people seem to think now that there will be at least 6 expansion packs, 1 for each rift, where you can go in to the rift and explore that plane... who knows how deep they will go or what is inside them!)

Game will be subscription based, not F2P. Saw a comment a while back saying that they didn't want to be compared to these F2P Asian MMO's (which all suck btw)

This game has 32 classes... that's 8 more than EQ2! And you can choose to be 3 classes at one time but of course you won't get the more specialised abilities of having invested all your points in one class.

Sorry to spam it up but this is looking pretty good.

Yeah the rifts do remind me a lot of Oblivion also.

Discovered today that when rifts are around for too long they settle in to footholds. Footholds are presumably more matured and difficult to remove without some significant effort. It has been confirmed that creatures from rifts and footholds will venture out and kill your quest givers and other player characters if left unattended. It is also confirmed that when two rifts from different planes of existence spawn next to each other they will fight. You can team up with a side if you are skilled enough to do so, then stab them in the back when you're done! There is still speculation about what might happen if 2 rifts of the same existence spawn next to each other... super rift? rare mob? lots of possibilities. The game is still in alpha and it's probably going to be a 2nd half of 2011 I think (most people think June sort of time but there are usually delays with MMO's)

This website has gathered what we have seen so far of each class (soul tree). They have made an interactive site where you can pick and choose abilities from multiple souls just like will be featured in the game. A lot of this is very likely to change when the game is released. The information was gathered from various videos and screenshots made publicly available.

There's a new podcast available at http://www.riftpodcast.com too (number 14) which explains questing, high level content, epic quests, dungeon quests, instancing etc. Sounds really good. You won't get all quests associated with a dungeon as soon as you enter which is good, there were some people worrying about that on the official forums complaining that it would make the game too easy, and I agree, so I am glad to hear that quests will not be dished out like that... some quests are item drops, some are things in the environment, and some from people. Sounds like there is quite a bit to do at the end game so far. They mention a couple of raid zones too.

If you registered in time, the beta codes are being assigned to accounts as we speak.

If not, then you are probably too late but there is still a chance you might get in!
