I came across this slight idea when I was searching around a bit earlier for news about sequels to games.. I tried looking for an everquest 3 and found this:

http://www.massively.com/2008/05/15/how ... erquest-3/

This isn't confirming this games is going to happen but one thing interested me:

"If you were an EQ3 designer, and all you had in front of you was a PS3 and a blank whiteboard, what features would you include to knock the socks off the players?"

EQ2 on its own is a well designed game in terms of general gameplay. But what would you all add to an MMO like this to really make one of the worlds best MMOs ever without making it overly complicated and making sure the gameplay is not in anyway annoying.

One of the best things I though made EQ2 stand out from things like World of Wacraft was something as simple as "Mentoring" All this basically did was allow higher level players to Mentor you, giving you an exp boost, lowering there level to yours and allowing high level people help out lower level people alot.

On Wow that was basically impossible.. You get exp debts just for someone in your group being 1 level higher than you.. Didn't really promote any kind of team work when your going to lose crap loads of experience for something as silly as that..

So what ideas do you noobs have!

Massive teamwork based stuff. It's an MMO, it should be massive.

I quite liked the idea of the big battles in EvE-O but never got round to playing it properly :(

Also, less grinding/repetitiveness. That's basically what drove me from EvE-O - the skill system was good (it was time based, you set a skill to train and it will be done in so long), but the missions you did for money got boring after so long, and I never got into the warry stuff because I was already losing interest.

Accessibility is a big one, but you don't want to have a game full of idiots.

That mentoring system sounds pretty good, though I have never played an XP based MMO.

Every game can get boring eventually if you over play it unless your just addicted.

Everquest has alot of things for you to work on and think about what your doing which I think makes it more interesting. And the PvP just really gets you going if 4 people try mob you and on your own you kick their ass.

The basic thing I'd say is many different places to explore, different kinds of quests, No PVP areas for people who want to just play and not get mobbed by the same people all day..

Biggest flaw basically is the pvp to be quite honest. Open pvp is awesome but getting to instances which are the only areas you can go without pvp is a pain in the ass and you can only do them once a day due to the awesome treasure ect to stop them being farmed to feck.

Though also did like the idea you can lock you experience so you only gain exp from quests and pvp combat which lets you get your skills and stuff up alot better, cause you can kill all you want and not have to worry about bypassing huge chunks of the game.

Graphics are a real let down in all the MMO's I have played and this has a big part in it for me. If they could merge an FPS game engine with an MMO without making it an MMOFPS like Huxley then I would be very happy. The Envy engine and the Cryengine2 are the ones I'm thinking of.

I would prefer to play an MMORPG with no story line whatsoever, because ending the story ends the game. It's rubbish to kill the final boss over and over again, and thus, save the planet over and over again. It's mad that one person can find some guys missing eel skins, and then he somehow loses them again ready for the next person... A game where you make your own rules almost like Second Life would be good in my opinion.

Also, the option for game developers to quickly expand and update a product free of charge is always a good thing. It would be funny to see certain areas blocked off by building work because it's 'under development' or you don't have the item 'hard hat lv100' lol.

The problem with having powerful graphics on MMO games is that the strain they'll put on servers would be horrendous, not to mention they'd lose sales from thousands of potential players that have crap computers (I believe something like WoW requires a hamster in a wheel to run). I think the greatest attraction for the majority of MMO games is their style of gameplay rather than how good they look graphically.

To be honest though, the best MMO games are the ones you don't have to pay monthly for (Guild Wars) ;)

Graphics wouldn't change the stress on a server - they're client side only. However, adding lots of physics objects would, unless they were non-important (couldn't affect gameplay, only looks) in which case they could be client side. I think TF2 does this for ragdolls.

The point about people not being able to run it is probably more why they don't do it. The solution to this would probably be along the lines of having a wide range of settings so it goes really low. Or even have different clients (EvE-O did this, there was a big graphics update in the last year, and you could opt out of "premium graphics" to keep the old look and low graphical demand).

Yeah, more none subscriptions would be awesome, aslong as it doesn't require money to buy stuff in game (like some MMOs do).

Yeah, the physics would be client side. It's why we have super powerful graphics cards with PhysX drivers for example.

The problem with client side physics is that it can't affect gameplay, as it could unfairly disadvantage people.

Well it wouldn't be a serve as a tree blocking your path, but not theirs because it calculated it differently.

I don't think graphics need to be utterly amazing a certain amount of physx would be cool but i dont think its worth a whole lot of that either...

But I think what aaron was mostly getting at is that the graphics engine needs to actually be good.

Everquest 2 was a bit flawed and the graphics could actually be changed from as lowe as pixelated peice of shit to pretty detailed and looking quite good. But I don't think it went about the right way in making PCs process all the graphics...

I remember when I played Ultima Online briefly YEEEEARS ago, they had a very interesting thing similar to EvE-O, in which you could either play on the new 3D client or stick to the old 2D isometric.

Not that they changed a lot.

Thats quite an interesting change in looks for the game o.O

Though ive never played any games like that really.. First online ones must have Been everquest 2 years ago.. Played guild wars and WoW since then aswell not really impressed by GW and WoW just GW was free xP

Gave up that now to anyway got ridiculous and I agree with aaron the whole story line thing kinda sucks the fun out of it when it comes to an end...

Hopefully GW2 will be an improvement on this though I did like the idea of having to do missions and almost certainly needing team work for most things accept farming. But once you completed all the missions you had to wait like a year for the new expansion to come out so you had something of interest to do.................................

Never really played any MMORPG's.... Mainly bcause RPG's in the whole dont interest me too much. I have no idea why either... They seem mostly tedious, but then again, I still play Pokemon... So errrm.. yeah :P

What I really dont like in the online world, is like dan said, coming up agaisnt someon who is like a million levels higher than you, and you dont stand a chance, but you cant get out of it, so you lose and then they rob all of your stuff :/

I think EvE-O did really well at combating that - no fixed level system. You had skills for improvements, but a player with a month of training in the right skills could easily beat a 4 year old player if they played it right. (Years instead of levels because EvE skills are time based)

AN interesting concept would be something with no skills but massive PvP (army v army kinda thing), to put everyone on an equal footing. It would be more fun and less grind, though also less addictive.

Eh? There was a limit on levels to what you could attack someone on EQ...

It varied in areas from like 4 - 12 12 being the places right at the end of the game where level makes almost 0 difference. Well it makes quite a bit of differnce but 2 people in the 70s could take out someone thts 80.. But yeah it worked pretty well though i think they widened the level range a bit to fast in certain places but it promotes team work anyay ;)

It would be interesting if they dropped the leveling idea and just went for pure skills or other various attributes, imbued armours that you have earned through, basically, skill and teamwork. That might work better than a leveling system.

Possibly but I think it would just take to long and how do you determine the skills increase... I hate the ay eve does it I like to get on and do things rather than let it automatically increase over periods of time...

Stargate Worlds?

Should be good ^_^, but i do like stargate also. FPS (might be with RPG qualities, i forget) some story missions but planned loads of worlds for PvP combat etc, territorial etc. they promised no subscription costs, and no fee for updates. i think they may charge a minimal fee for season updates but i'm not sure.

Sounds good in theory.

POTENTIALLY. I find gundam games were very sparse in life. I know most were post-apochalytic everyone is dead scenarios, but when it was you and one other pilot fighting in a huge city with nothing else happening, well it wasn' captivating :\.

But it'd sure get confusing having multiple gundams everywhere O.O .
