There is an interesting contrast between the general audience reaction on Question Time, and the most highly rated comments.

More interesting recommended comments on BBC news.

http://newsforums.bbc.co.uk/nol/thread. ... #paginator

What are everyone's thoughts on this?

I do not agree with a lot of what the BNP advocate, but I find it interesting that they are accused of being fascists trying to destroy freedom and democracy, by protesters who are trying to silence the BNP and prevent them from expounding their views. Surely they have a democratic right to say what they want to say? I think they do, and those trying to prevent the BNP from being heard to defend democracy are being somewhat hypocritical.

I must admit it is interesting that they were saying that the BNP shouldn't be treated as a 'normal' political party for discriminating against people. That's the best way isn't it? Discriminate against the people who are discriminating

A lot of what they say must surely be against EU/UN law, which would mean they certainly shouldn't be treated the same.

Their policies would be against EU law :) which is why they couldn't do it. Unless they took Britain out of the EU or something :s.

Quite a few are critising the bbc for letting the BNP get publicity.

I think this counts as bad publicity :P

Though some people think it gives them legitimacy.

While I don't agree with what the BNP have to say, I will surely defend their rights to the death.

Why couldn't he have simply been on a normal episode of question time?

What the BBC did was give credence to the arguments the BNP supporters will have with the show, that they invited people to simply not allow him to speak.

There did not seem to be a single BNP supporter in the audience. Whilst it could be that they 'have no support', I find that hard to believe, if only from reading the BBC 'Have your say' comments, as well as what some of the people the BBC interviewed afterwards said:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/8322626.stm

Still, perhaps the BBC did not want to put itself in the position of having a few BNP people in the audience in case things got 'out of hand'.

Also, if the BNP's current policies (not what they formerly were) are against EU law, how were they able to stand as a legitimate party? Or are people talking about what they 'used' to be (I say that as they have tried, or at least appeared to try, to become more moderate)?

The issue boils down to it not being a "normal" QT. Most of the time they ask the panels view on government policy... This episode was just a huge rig against the BNP. The BBC said they deserve a voice, which is correct. The way it went on however was pretty ridiculous...

Exactly. I doubt things will improve if the BNP appear on Question Time a second time.
