Just been watching some in the future space stuff like, been thinking, Will we really be colonizing space and jumping to other galaxies and space travel being everyday stuff?
Or will the human race try desparately to do this type of thing but never actually achive anything and just die out?

Discuss guys : )

The nearest star is 4.3 light years away, and FTL (faster than light) travel by conventional means is impossible. That means it would take atleast 4.3 years to get the nearest star, and that's not accounting for the effects of relativity (time dilation cheesecake) and the difficulty in getting to near light speeds.

As for galaxies, not a hope, the nearest galaxy, Andromeda, is 2.2 MILLION light years away.

However, spacetravel will become far more commonplace in the future as we develop more efficient ways of getting into space. Colonising the Moon and Mars would be difficult and possibly not worthwhile, but quite possible. The Moon would actually make a very weird habitat, the temperature range is from about -100C to 100C, I think.

BTW, one common theory for FTL travel is folding space, but we have no idea how to do that.

We here in the trade call that science fiction. ;)

Providing of course that we do not annihilate each other beforehand.

Won't happen, self preservation overrules everything else.

Indeed, so when both sides hit the 'big red button', so to speak, to annihilate each other before the other annihilates them, what then?

If that argument won we would never have wars. It is not that simple.

Heh. You never know if we get visited by some kinda Aliens which give us Technology knowledge. And we can Space Travel. It could happen tomorrow or next week. You never know.

If there are aliens of any intelligence out there who notice us, they will do one of two things:

1. Hide and study us, we are too risky to be shown them.

Or

2. Reveal themselves in preparation for our removal.

So, if any aliens start revealing themselves, start digging your bunker. O_O

Cold war was cold for a reason. The total annihilation of the planet would require nuclear war, and that won't happen, as it would end in the total annihilation of the planet... self preservation.

Your argument for war is inadequete as wars aren't carried out using big red buttons and the end of the world.

It was an analogy, hence the ' '.

I know, I was just saying. It's better to think we don't want to kill each other in war and carry out war only when necessary for good reasons ^^
