A freak accident in a training session for the Luge event has left a georgian Luger dead.

The International Olympic Committee confirmed the death of Nodar Kumaritashvili, a 21-year-old Georgian luger, who died in a crash on a training run. Deborah Lutterbeck reports. << Stolen from the YT vid

Luge is an event on a Bobsled track where competitors slide feet first (as opposed to head first in the Skeleton). The luger was exiting the final corner of the run when he slid abruptly down the track and onto the much sharper inclined inside wall. This launched his sled into the air and bounced him out of place, over the opposite wall and into a steel pillar which was supporting seating. He was doing an esitmated 88mph on impact and likely died instantly.
