Any programmers or video editors, or wannabe podcasters, PM me. Looking to get into more projects with the New Year.

Or, anyone with a good recording interface could try the digitalmusician.net apps with me :D

Interesting, though I don't have any audio projects myself ^^

Depending on how the audiosurf engine translates audio tracks, I suppose you coul theoretically 'design' tracks. I'd be interested to see what it did when feeding certain psychoacoustic sounds into it.

Eh, audiosurf is VERY finicky about short bursts of "loud"(comparative to other instruments)bursts of audio, example: Never gonna give you up is VERY slow, but it crawls to a near stop before a snare hit, then it majorly speeds up making it very rough, whereas metal songs tend to have instruments "bleed in" because of a louder mix, and cause smooth rides, albeit insanely fast.

Basically, unless you want a LOAD of bumps, make sure your sounds don't have any "spikes" in them.

OK Savernake, I need your assistance.

Lets say my brother has the hardware required to connect his turntables to a PC via SPDIF. How easy and how expensive would it be to get his vinyl in to MP3 format?

Currently, we do not have a sound card with SPDIF (no sound card at all) or any recording software.

If possible, the ability to cut a mix in to tracks would be good. And if it could all be done in one application, then, well, that would just probably make me have a little sex wee actually. To be honest, more so my brother than me.

Hope you can shed some light.

I probably know less than Savernake here, but I have to say that Audacity could probably cover all your recording demands here.

If I'm to go with Audacity, which I am pretty sure works, then I'd rather go for the Ubuntu version.

I love audacity(i used it in my video) It's really clan, easy to use.

Main issue is that the undo button has limited memory and screws up easily :P

This is what I want doing:

Image

There are two mixing decks and a... mixer. I guess. The squiggle represents a huge amount of cable and a couple of devices of which I do not know their function. The thing on the right is a PC, monitor and keyboard.

The mixed music needs to be able to be split in to tracks instead of just one long MP3. Also, it needs to be of decent quality. It could also do with being editable at a later stage. It could also do with some finalisation/finishing touch effects or cleanup utilities.

Is there a piece of software that can do it?

The budget for the software is... cheap. But preferably, it all needs to be one application.

I know that Adobe Audition can do it - but it can also do a million and one things that are not required at the same time. Good thing is, it's not rediculously expensive ($349).

And yes I am interested in purchasing, not torrenting!

All software is budget, if you know where to luck. I love legal piracy.

In either case, just google for "garage band for windows", you should find something. Frooty loops demo is also pretty good, or hell AUDACITY.

Audacity is free and makes sense for the simple task that you are doing. I've never used it but I expect you can edit it from one album long track to individual tracks, but cutting in the desired place, placing the 'markers' around each track at a time and exporting to MP3/WAV.

The main thing is your hardware. I'm confused, you say your brother has hardware then you say he doesn't?

You need a converter, usually called an interface. As mentioned on another thread, I don't know what 'cards' you can get but you will likely find affordable USB or firewire models from M-Audio or Mackie, if you're spending under £100 or something. All you need is a stereo input, ideally phono so it's easy to come from the record player (but you can always get phono to jack or XLR leads if the interface requires).

Ask at gearslutz.com in the cheap equipment zone. Be careful that they insist on spending too much money for better conversion, they're really <LOOK MA, I AM SWEARING> anal about fidelity. I'm sure there's a good product for you somewhere.

Thanks for the information.

He has everything on the non-PC side sorted. Nothing on the PC side has been purchased.

You'll have to ask what this non-pc stuff is then. Usually it will have a USB cable so you're probably already set, minus audacity.
