The price has dropped by £110 exc. VAT on the EVGA SSC model as posted on the first page. It's still not good enough.

Still too expensive, but £270 is much better than £400 (cheapest now and on release).

From what I have heard, TSMC charge by the mm^2 on their wafers. These chips are HUGE (over 5cm^2) so I would imagine them charging a lot.

Heh, but it's the only way they're going to sell with the 4870s around. Sucks to be nVidia.

The GTX260 and GTX280 have had another price slash this morning.
A GTX280 can cost a lot less than a 4870X2 now. But bear in mind that the 4870X2 can outperform the GTX280 by a huge margin, by up to 70% given the right application.
I still don't know who would go for a GTX2x0 card. Sure they are quite good. But from every single review I have read about these cards, the general opinion is that OK they are quite fast, but they don't do what they do with any pinache, they don't do anything glamorous. The drivers are artificially limited (hey, actually ATI can match this now!) and the price drop doesn't stop their chips running so hot and their coolers running so loud and providing an awful performance:watt ratio.
To be honest, after seeing how much better the 4870X2 is and if I was in the financial position to purchase a GTX280, I would wait until my next pay day and get a 4870X2 or two. The 4870X2 is more expensive but is so much more powerful.

Well at less than £300 they are starting to become reasonable, and it shows how much pressure nVidia is under, for a £400+ card to drop by over 30% in the first couple of months.
The 260s are nearly in line with the 4870s now, and they have similar performance, so that's about right.
